Boxing - Pacquiao and Mayweather Schedule Next Fights

Bookmark and Share by Tim Furious

The blockbuster fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather may be off, but that doesn’t mean that the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world will be out of work. Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys and the $1.2 billion venue known as Cowboys stadium, will house Pacquiao’s next fight against Joshua Clottey.

It’s been a stellar kick off to the new year for Jones, whose beloved Cowboys ended a playoff drought stemming back to 1996 with a lopsided victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Shots of Jones’ owners box showed a familiar face that belonged to Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions, the company that oversees Pacquiao’s bookings. During the melee on Saturday night, Jones took the time to tour Bob Arum and Todd deBoef around the Arlington stadium, showing off its state of the art facilities.

Like many fight fans in the world, Jones would’ve preferred to showcase two of boxing’s brightest talents with Floyd Mayweather and Manny, but instead he offered $25 million to host Pacquiao’s fight against Clottey. Though Cowboys Stadium can fill up to 100,000 spectators, Jones has estimated that the arena will be prepared to house about 40,000 fight fans.

After the Eagles-Cowboys game, Arum was caught gushing over the venue saying that Jones’ new palace in Dallas is, “the most incredible stadium setting I have ever seen. It is absolutely unbelievable.” Though the fight between Mayweather and Pac would’ve been the hottest selling PPV ticket in 2010, Arum remains ecstatic that Jones has agreed to host a fight with Top Rank.

Joshua Clottey is from Ghana, and at 5-foot-8, the man known as “The Grand Master” has gone 35-3-1 SU in his career. Most notably, Clottey has never lost via knock-out, instead losing by DQ and decision. Most recently, Clottey dropped a split decision to Miguel Cotto in June 2009 for the WBO Welterweight title. Clottey is a former IBF Welterweight Champion, and will be one of many men to try and upset the all-universe talent of Pacquiao.

Not to be outdone, Mayweather has lined up his next fight on March 13th as well. The undefeated fighter will take on an opponent to be determined at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. There’s a relatively long laundry list of opponents that Mayweather could take on, but Golden Boy Productions will be hard pressed to match the terrifying promotion duo of Jerry Jones and Top Rank.

Instead of fighting for boxing supremacy and the titles, Mayweather and Pacquiao will now be duking it out for PPV buys by headlining different cards on the same night. It’s not the fight that we wanted to see between the two, but wins by either fighter will only garner more momentum. These two are destined to fight each other, and neither blood tests, egos nor money will stand in the way. We just might have to wait a little bit longer, which isn’t a steep price to pay when we all know that Pacquiao-Mayweather could very well end up being the best boxing fight in history. Bad blood has been spilled, and we’ll see who comes out on top on March 13th.
