Super Six World Boxing Classic betting outlook

Bookmark and Share by BetUS Staff

Fans of pugilism and boxing betting haven’t been treated in this way since the early 1990s, when Don King attempted to bring together the best middleweights in the world for a round robin tourney. While diehard MMA betting fanatics contest that the sport of boxing is dead, SHOWTIME has stepped up and will be putting on one of the most talked about sports betting events of not only this year, but 2010.

The network’s recent press release has described the inaugural Super Six World Boxing Classic as “a round-robin, six-fighter tournament featuring the class of the Super Middleweight division from home and abroad.”

Quite simply, this is exactly what boxing, and the world of sports at large, needs.

Those who bet on boxing often have the same complaint: There is often no value on boxing odds, because the fights being made simply are not competitive. This time however, four of the fighters involved have never lost a single bout. Two are current world champions who will be putting their belts on the line immediately as the tournament begins. Another two are a pair of the hottest boxing prospects in the past decade, and one is a former undisputed world champion.

How’s that for competition?

The opening-round bracket looks like this: WBC titlist Carl Froch will take on Andre Dirrell, Jermain Taylor will battle Arthur Abraham, and Mikkel Kessler will duke it out with Andre Ward.

Froch and Dirrell will go at it in October, making that bout the primary target for those betting on boxing at the moment. Both men are undefeated, and yet both men have some question mark surrounding them as well. Dirrell is the untested prospect who has yet to truly face top-flight talent, despite a storied amateur and Olympic background. Froch, meanwhile, is the everyman, low on pure boxing ability and high on raw power and heart inside the squared circle.

Without question, the champion Froch will be heavily favoured in this bout, especially considering that it will take place in his native England. However, Dirrell could possess the raw endurance and technical skills to wear Froch down. Fans of boxing betting saw Jermaine Taylor outbox Froch for nearly 12 rounds before wilting and crumpling after a barrage of punches from the steadfast Brit.

Fans looking to get involved in futures boxing betting at the BetUS sportsbook will likely be eyeing Arthur Abraham, the former middleweight titlist moving up to take part in the event. Abraham is fresh off a destructive performance against Mahir Oral, and will get a chance to pick at damaged goods—Taylor—later in the day after Froch and Taylor do battle. Abraham’s blinding speed and ring generalship make him a hot candidate to win the entire tournament.

It will be a historic event to say the least, and is as good a reason as any to analyze the boxing lines at BetUS!
