On Saturday, look out for one of the top heavyweight fights of 2009, when WBC champion Vitali Klitschko (38-2, 37 KO’s), takes on the undefeated Kevin Johnson (22-0-1, 9 KO’s).

The fight will be Klitschko’s third title defense of 2009, and fourth overall, after coming back from retirement in 2008. Klitschko held the heavyweight title before leaving the sport in 2005 due to injuries. In his last title defense, Klitschko beat the previously undefeated Chris Arreola.

Johnson on the other hand, is relatively unknown, but is currently ranked Ring Magazine’s No. 10 challenger in the heavyweight division. He earned this fight by defeating Devin Vargas in May.

As for Saturday night in Bern, Switzerland (where this Klitschko vs Johnson is taking place), it will be power against power, like most truly great heavyweight matchups. Klitschko is known for his dominant punching power, which should be no surprise because of those 37 knockouts in 38 wins. 97 percent of Klitschko’s wins have come by knockout, the highest percentage in heavyweight history.

Johnson on the other hand, will try to attack the champion with quickness and grit. He isn’t an incredibly physical boxer, as is probably obvious because of the nine knockouts in 22 wins. But he does have a strong jab that could wear on Klitschko as the fight goes on.

Either way, every indication seems to be that Klitschko should be your pick. Yes he’s quite a bit older (37, compared to Johnson’s 30), but he’s also one of the most physically freakish strong men to ever box. And if Johnson has only been able to win nine fights by knockout, how are we to expect him to beat a champion who has never been knocked down in his entire career?

While I expect Johnson to go past the 9 ½ rounds for the over/under, I find it hard to believe that without knockout power he’ll be able to actually defeat Klitschko and win this title.

The boxing odds may seem a little high on this one, but you’ll be rewarded for taking Vitali Klitschko. Even as a relatively new boxing bettor, I’m confident in taking the champion to win this match straight up.
