POST SUPER BOWL BLUES?

It seems as though there are really only two seasons in a year – a season with football, and a season without. Ahhh. We love football. It’s just soooo…fittingly “Patriotic” of America’s pastime. Speaking of which, were we the only ones who were just a little bit disappointed in the Super Bowl? As resident handicapper our expert put it “The Patriots didn’t win. The Eagles lost”. That statement along speaks a thousand words.

Now before we turn our attention to college hoops and the NBA – we still get one more football fix: The Pro Bowl, a.k.a. the NFL All-Star game. QBs Manning and McNabb will go head-to-head in Hawaii on Sunday Feb 13th, 2005. Don’t forget to bet the game with BetUS.com. Check out the site for props, parlays and odds.

When you’re not watching the game, pay a visit to The Locker Room – our newest addition. There’s a little bit of something for everyone there…read more to find out!

Last issue Hot Dots advised going against the Washington Wizards in four road games as they struggled to cope with the loss of Larry Hughes who was credited with keeping them on an even keel. Those four plays went 2-2, leaving our year-to-date record at 5-9.

This week our focus is on the effect of the NBA All-Star game (played February 18) on the games played immediately after it. We look to teams that have been snubbed in the All-Star game to have both a motivational point in their favor, as well as the extra rest. Sacramento is such a team. Despite an excellent record, not one of their players was selected as an All-Star so we look for them to come out with a vengeance in the season’s second half.

Sacramento plays Atlanta at home on February 22, and we’ll be on them even if we have to lay 17.5. The Kings then take to the road for games against the Mavericks on the 24th, 76er’s the 26th, Washington the 27th, and Charlotte on March 1. We’ll sit out the Washington game as it is a back to back against a team that can run step for step with the Kings, we’ll count all the rest as plays.

Another common occurrence for the seasons second half is for the games to be more wide open. Whether this is because the All-Star game itself is always a track meet or because the non-All-Stars get their batteries recharged is hard to say. But we do look for situations to play the over, and we’ll be especially interested in the Golden State Warriors.

Coach Montgomery has said all season that in order to be successful his team needed to run, but he’s just now getting the bodies back to be able to do so. The Warriors had a hard time scoring ninety points for a month, so as they revert back to their fast-pace game it may take a couple of weeks for the oddsmaker to catch up to their new style. So we’ll take the over both before and after the All-Star game in these four Warriors games: Phoenix 2/13, Dallas 2/15, Atlanta 2/23, @Memphis 3/1.

This recipe, featuring California avocados, cayenne pepper and a generous dose of chopped garlic is the Mardi Gras Queen of guacamoles. Serve with extra crispy tortillas and enjoy.

  • 2 ripe avocados, about 1 pound
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup finely diced red bell pepper
  • 1/2 cup small cherry tomatoes (cut in halves or quarters, if large)
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced green onion
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon chopped, fresh thyme leaves or 1/4 rounded teaspoon dried
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

PREPARATION
Coarsely mash avocados; stir in lemon juice. Fold in remaining ingredients. Guacamole is best made as close to serving as possible. For short-term storage, seal in an airtight container with a piece of plastic wrap against the surface of the guacamole.
