Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Southern Hills CC will become the first venue to host a fourth PGA Championship this weekend. The course hosted the Championship in 1970 (Dave Stockton - winner); 1982 (Raymond Floyd) and 1994(Nick Price).
Fresh off of his Firestone victory last weekend, Tiger Woods has been assigned the best PGA Championship betting line of +275.
Woods’ win last weekend was his third in a row at Firestone and his sixth win in nine tournaments there. More important for U.S. Open).
Phil Mickelson has been assigned the second-best PGA Tour odds for this weekend (+1200). Jim Furyk is next at +1600 followed by Ernie Els (+1800).
Furyk pulled out of last weekend’s Bridgestone Invitational on Thursday citing an ailing back. He stated that he could probably have played at Firestone, but not competed, and that he wanted to give himself a week to recover for this weekend’s Championship. It will be useful to keep one’s eyes peeled on his physical condition as Furyk tackles Southern Hills next weekend.
After winning his second tournament of the season – The Players Championship on May 13, 2007 – Mickelson has missed three cuts of five cuts and had to pull out of the U.S. Open due to a wrist injury. His only finish in that time span was last weekend’s 46th-place ending at Firestone.
Following his 4th-place finish at the British Open, Ernie Els’ next and most-recent outing was his 22nd-place finish at Firestone last weekend.
K.J. Choi has had a great run in his last five outings, including two wins (PGA Tour Odds of +4000 are tantalizing.
Vijah Singh and Padraig Harrington were each signed matching odds of +2500. Singh finished 56th last weekend but has two top five in his last five tournaments (Canadian Open [2nd]).
Sergio Garcia and Retief Goosen are the only other PGA Tour players with assigned odds of less-then +3000. They were each given odds of +2800 for this weekend’s Championship at Southern Hills.
