Golf: Check out these Tournament Matchups in the Honda Classic

Bookmark and Share by D.S. Williamson

Some of the best golfers in the world will be teeing off in the Honda Classic on Thursday. It’s amazing that the PGA National Golf Course in Palm Beach, Florida, has found a way to put together such an incredible field.

The purse for the Honda Classic is only $5,600,000. That’s chump change compared to the 7 to 8 million purses for the WGC tournaments or the 7 million purses for the major tournaments. Neither Lee Westwood nor Padraig Harrington played in last year’s Honda Classic yet here they are this year.

The tournament matchups in the golf sportsbook for the Honda Classic are very interesting. Let’s take a look at the best of those matchups right now.

Golf Betting Trends: Honda Classic Tournament Matchups

  1. Robert Allenby -105 vs. Rory McIlroy -125 - - McIlroy’s back might still be an issue this week. That has to be taken into consideration when deciding on which golfer to bet in this matchup. Allenby has 3 Top 10 finishes at PGA National and is coming off of an 8th place finish in the Phoenix Open. He’s also going off at better odds than McIlroy.
  2. Pick: Robert Allenby

  3. Paul Casey -125 vs. Lee Westwood -105 - - This will be Westwood’s first start at PGA National. Casey doesn’t have a lot of history on the course, but he was awesome finishing second to Ian Poulter in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Tournament and finished tied for 10th in the SBS Championship. That’s a 10th and 2nd place finish in two tournaments so far on the PGA Tour this year. Casey gets the nod.
  4. Pick: Paul Casey

  5. Rickie Fowler +110 vs. Camilo Villegas -140 - - Villegas finished 3rd in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Tournament and then finished tied for 8th in the Waste Management Phoenix Open last week. Camilo appeared to be on his way to a victory after shooting a 9 under in the 1st Round of the Phoenix Open. What happened? Nothing really. Other golfers just played better than he did in the final 3 rounds of the tournament. One of those who played better was Rickie Fowler who ended up 2nd in the Phoenix Open. Fowler has been hit or miss. He missed the cut in the Sony Open, Bob Hope Classic and Northern Trust Open but hit with a 5th place finish in the Farmers Insurance Open and the Phoenix Open. Will he hit or miss this week? I’m going to go with hit because I like getting above even money on Fowler in this matchup.
  6. Pick: Rickie Fowler

  7. Anthony Kim -120 vs. Y.E. Yang -110 - - In the battle of the two Korean cultured stars, Yang easily gets the nod. No offense to Kim, but the 2009 USPGA Champion is heads and tails above him right now in terms of overall play. Besides a 46th place finish in the Sony Open in Hawaii, Yang hasn’t finished worse than 20th in any tournament on the Tour so far this year. He’s coming off of a 3rd place finish in the Waste Management Phoenix Open and won the Honda Classic in 2009. Kim hasn’t finished better than 24th in 3 tournaments this year.
  8. Pick: Y.E. Yang

  9. Padraig Harrington -115 vs. Ernie Els -115 - - Els won the Honda Classic in 2008. He’s started out 2010 very well with a 12th place finish in the Sony Open, a 5th place finish in the Farmers Insurance Open, a 10th place finish in the Northern Trust Open, and a 17th place finish in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Tournament. Padraig Harrington missed the cut in the Northern Trust Open and finished 16th in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Paddy also didn’t get out of the 1st Round in the WGC-Accenture. Els is playing better and Paddy has said that he’ll need at least two more tournaments to get his swing in order. Why go against what Paddy says himself? I’m betting Els.
  10. Pick: Ernie Els
