U.S. Open for Mickelson - slicing his drive way into the trees - but he somehow recovered and recovered well. From about 140 yards his approach went under one tree and over another from an impossible angle to leave himself 9-feet from the cup and a birdie chance to win.
"There were trees everywhere, but I thought I could hit a wedge through that gap on the green, and I was hoping for a 25-30 foot putt.” said Mickelson. “That was the goal to have a chance at birdie and make a par at worse. And it just came off perfectly and I’m just lucky. I’m as surprised as anybody I was able to make 3 from over there.”
This was Mickelson’s 34th career win, and he takes home a check for more than a million dollars. Phil also becomes the only player on tour to pick up multiple wins in 5 straight years; his other win this year took place at the Northern Trust open in February.
