Golf Update: Poulter Beats Casey in All English WGC-Accenture Match Play Finale

Tiger Woods, the former Accenture spokesperson, made a big splash this past Friday when he apologized for sleeping with a bunch of women and acting like an idiot for years. Then, he lambasted the media. Then, he said that he was going back to rehab.
It was all, well, sort of annoying because while Tiger was looking like a moron at the podium, some of the best golfers in the world were battling it out in Marana, AZ at the WGC-Accenture.
The field of 64 ended up as a field of 2 on Sunday after Paul Casey beat Camilo Villegas at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning after the their match was suspended due to darkness on Saturday night. Casey beat Villegas and then had to take on a well-rested Ian Poulter.
Poulter, who was going off at 22 to 1 in the golf sportsbook to win the WGC-Accenture, beat Casey 4 to 2 in the 36 hole marathon finale on Sunday. By the time the two Englishman had hit the course together, Poulter’s victory was to be expected. In previous tournaments, Poulter had finished in the quarterfinals 4 times in his quest for the Walter Hagen Trophy. Poulter excelled with the format and once he took down Sergio Garcia by 6 holes on Saturday, his victory against Casey has almost become a foregone conclusion.
It was Ian Poulter’s first victory on the PGA Tour. The win pushed Poulter to 5th on the World Golf Rankings.
Top Seeds Fail to Impress
Not a single one seed in the WGC-Accenture moved on past the 2nd round. Steve Stricker, the world’s #2 ranked golfer, lost to Ross McGowan and never got a chance to take on the young Ryo Ishikawa.
Martin Kaymer, Jim Furyk and Lee Westwood all left the match play even after the second round when Tim Clark took down Kaymer, Charl Schwartzel took down Furyk and Nick Watney beat Westwood.
Does that mean that Stricker, Kaymer, Furyk and Westwood are bad golfers? Nope. It just means that some golfers can handle a match play environment and others cannot.
2nd seeds didn’t do very well either with Oliver Wilson upsetting Rory McIlroy, who was battling a bad back, in the second round, Ben Crane beating Henrik Stenson in the 1st round and Padraig Harrington losing to Jeev Mikah Singh in the 1st round.
The lone 2nd seed to do exceptionally well was Paul Casey who golfed his way to a second place finish in the WGC-Accenture.
Poulter Comes Right Back This Week in Waste Management Phoenix Open
Ian Poulter won’t be resting this week after his WGC-Accenture Match Play victory. He’s in the field for this week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Another golfer listed in the field, and likely favorite in the golf sportsbook, is Phil Mickelson who inexplicably skipped last week’s match play event. Mickelson hasn’t had a great 2010 so far, getting drubbed in the Northern Trust Open a few weeks ago, a tournament he won in 2009. Mickelson finished 45th in that tournament. He bounced back with an 8th place finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
Will the world’s 3rd ranked golfer play better this weekend in the Waste Management Phoenix Open? Or, will he prove once again to be a big time underlay in the golf sportsbook?
