European Golf Tour: Who Will Win the Avantha Masters?

The European Tour heads to India this week for the Avantha Masters (Tee-off: 2/10/2010). Just because the tournament is being played in India, it doesn’t mean that there won’t be a lot of money to be made.
In fact the purse for the Avantha Masters is 1.5 million Euros. That’s a lot of dough and a lot of very good golfers will be lining up to try and take home the winner’s share of that dough.
Let’s take a look at some of the top contenders with golf betting odds.
Avantha Masters: To Win
- Prayad Marksaeng +2000 - - Thailand’s Marksaeng so far hasn’t had a terrific 2010, his best finish was a 31st in the Dubai Desert Classic last week, but he shot a 10 under in the WGC-CA in 2009 on the PGA Tour and finished 2nd in the Maybank Malaysian Open and 8th in the HSBC Champions in 2009. What it means is that Marksaeng is a good golfer, going off at nice odds, in a less than stellar field. He’s worth a serious look to win this.
- Jeev Mikha Singh +1000 - - Singh is from India. So, he should know the DLF Golf and Country Club better than any player on the planet. Well, maybe not better than any player on the planet, but better than almost every player on the planet. Singh finished 13th in the Dubai World Championship in 2009, the European Tour’s version of the PGA’s Tour Championship, and 15th with a 4 under in the Dubai Desert Classic. He’s a legitimate favorite in this. At double-digit golf odds, he must be considered.
- Wen-Chong Liang +1200 - - Liang will be making his 2010 debut on the European Tour in the Avantha Masters. If he plays in the Avantha the way he played in the Dubai World Championship and the UBS Hong Kong Open, he could win it. Liang finished 2nd in the Barclay’s Singapore Open, 11th in the UBS HK and 16th in the DWC in 3 out of his last 4 tournaments in 2009. That’s pretty good.
- Shiv Kapur +2500 - - Kapur is another Indian local that could prove tough in this tournament. Kapur, like Marksaeng, hasn’t had a great 2010 so far. He hasn’t been able to crack the Top 50 yet in any of the three tournaments in which he’s played. That could turn around if he can find the form that led to a 2nd place finish in the South African Championship last December. Kapur’s driving accuracy is down in 2010 to 63.53% but his greens hit in regulation percentage is better at 71.05 as opposed to 67.08 in 2009. The greens hit in regulation percentage should start putting him into a good position for birdies. Maybe, it will happen this week in the Avantha Masters.
- Darren Clarke +1200 - - Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke might not be as famous as his countryman, the brilliant Rory McIlroy, but he’s pretty good in his own right. The 27th place finish in the Dubai Desert Classic wasn’t bad given the field he faced, and the 2nd place finish in the Joburg Open in January and the 11th place finish in the UBS Hong Kong Open in late 2009 are both tournaments that sports gamblers can look to when deciding whether or not to bet Clarke. He could show up at the DLF Golf and Country Club and put the rest of the field on fire.
Best Long Shot
Arjun Atwal +50000 - - Atwal is a huge long shot for a reason. He didn’t play a single tournament on the European Tour in 2009. The only tournament he’s played in so far in 2010 was the Dubai Desert Classic last week where he finished at +10 and in 122nd place. So, why do I like him as my long shot? He should have better knowledge of the course than any other golfer in this tournament besides Singh and possibly Kapur. Will that be enough? Doubtful, but at 50 to 1, why not take a shot?
