Golf Odds to win: Is Phil Mickelson a Good Bet in the Phoenix Open?

Bookmark and Share by D.S. Williamson

The golf sportsbook is offering numerous wagering opportunities to sports gamblers for this week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open.

As is often the case since Tiger Woods went on sabbatical, Phil Mickelson is the favorite in almost every category. That includes being the favorite to finish in the Top 4 in the Phoenix Open.

Will Lefty do it? Or, is he a bad bet considering the golf odds?

Phoenix Open: To Finish in the Top 4
Tee-off: 2/25/2010

Best Bet: J.B. Holmes +400

Holmes has been very good in the three tournaments he’s started in so far in 2010. In the Farmers Insurance Open, he finished 27 th. In the Northern Trust Open he finished 3 rd and in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am he finished 2 nd. Holmes is a serious threat to win the Phoenix Open this week because he’s won it twice in the last four years. That’s good enough for me to write that he’s the best bet, at the odds, to finish in the Top 4.

Best Bet at odds of +400 through +900: Kevin Na +600

Na finished tied for 3 rd at Scottsdale in the 2009 Phoenix Open. He hasn’t had a stellar 2010 with an 8 th place finish in the Bob Hope Classic and a 10 th place finish in the Northern Trust Open book-ended by a 52 nd place finish in the Sony Open and a 56 th place finish in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Na has 3 top 4 finishes or better in his 5 starts in the Phoenix Open. 6 to 1 are huge overlaid odds on Na.

Best Bet at odds of +1000 through +2000: Paul Goydos +2000

Goydos started out 2010 with a 39 th place finish in the Sony Open, a 74 th place finish in the Bob Hope Classic and missing the cut in the Farmers Insurance Open. Then, somehow, someway, he found his swing. Goydos has finished tied for 5 th in his last two tournaments in which he’s played, the Northern Trust Open and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The odds are worth taking a shot on Goydos to finish in the Top 4.

Best Long Shot: Michael Letzig +3500

Letzig finished tied for 12 th in the 2009 Phoenix Open. He’ll need to step it up this week and his form has been absolutely horrendous so far in 2010 with a 32 nd in the Northern Trust Open being his best finish so far. But he played horribly in 2009 before the Phoenix Open. So, maybe lightning strikes twice and this year, well, this year he improves for at least a 4 th place finish. At odds of 35 to 1, Letzig deserves serious long shot betting consideration.

Others To Consider

Kenny Perry +600 - - Perry won at Scottsdale in 2009 and nobody is paying attention to him. That’s when the old pro is most dangerous.

Brandt Snedeker +800 - - Snedeker his ranked in the Top 3 in putting on the PGA Tour and hasn’t finished worse than 21 st yet in 2010. He could pull off a Top 4 finish in this.

Charley Hoffman +1500 - - He lost to Kenny Perry in a playoff in last year’s Phoenix Open. Because of that, he deserves respect for a Top 4 finish in this year’s tournament.
