Golf Free Pick: Stricker is an Easy Favorite to Win the Transitions this Week

Steve Stricker, the world’s #2 ranked golfers, is the favorite to win the Transitions Championship this week.
Yes, the golf world is abuzz with the news that Tiger Woods, the mad lover himself, will return to action at the 2010 Masters, but there is a golf tournament going on this week and the golf sportsbook is offering odds to win on that tournament.
So, will Stricker come up big? Or, will one of his peers take him down?
Let’s take a look at the Transitions Championship, this week’s PGA Tour Event.
PGA Tour: Transitions Championship
Where: Innisbrook Resort-Copperhead Course, Palm Harbor, Florida
When: 1st Round – April 18th
Best Bet A: Vijay Singh +1800
Vijay is back, golf betting fans! That’s a good thing. The 2008 FedEx Cup winner had a horrible, atrocious, 2009 but his 2010, although not starting out well, has turned the corner in recent weeks with a 4th place finish in the Honda Classic and an 11th place finish in the WGC-CA. He won at Innisbrook in 2004 and has finished tied for 2nd in greens in regulation the last two weeks. He can get the job done.
Best Bet B: Steve Stricker +1000
I hate betting the chalk in a golf tournament, but Stricker is no regular chalk. First, he’s going off at double-digit odds. Second, he finished tied for 4th in last year’s Transitions Championship, only 2 strokes off of the winner, where he led the field in birdies and has 3 Top 10 finishes out of 5 tournaments played so far in 2010 including a victory in the Northern Trust Open. The PGA Tour’s #1 ranked all around golfer should tear up the course this week.

Best +2000 to +5000 Bet: Stewart Cink + 4500
Cink shot a 65 at TPC Blue Monster last Sunday which means that he’s in good form. He finished 2nd in the Transitions with a 2 under, 2 strokes off of the winner, in 2008 and finished tied for 3rd in 2005 and tied 19th in 2006. Cink has a solid history at Innisbrook. The main question is whether or not that 65 from last Sunday is a sign that his game is coming around.
Best Long Shot Bet A: Matthew Goggin +7500
Goggin finished tied for 4th with a 6 under in 2009 at Innisbrook. He’s only made the cut twice out of five tournaments played in 2010 but he could turn it around on a course that he likes. He did finish 4th at the Phoenix Open a few weeks back and tied for 14th at Innisbrook in 2008. So, there are some things to like about this long shot golfer.
Best Long Shot Bet B: Charlie Wi +7000
After missing the cut in the Sony Open and finishing 37th in the Farmers Insurance Open, Wi finished 20th in the Northern Trust Open, 27th in the AT&T Pebble Beach, missed the cut in the Phoenix Open and then busted out with an 8th place finish in the Honda Classic. Last year, Wi finished tied for 4th with a 6 under, 2 strokes off of the eventual winner, Retief Goosen, in the Transitions Championship. At the odds, Wi isn’t the worst stab in the world.
Tiger may be returning for the 2010 Masters and that may be in three weeks, but it doesn’t mean that sports gamblers can’t take a look at who to bet in this week’s Transitions Championship. Steve Stricker, the world’s #2 golfer, might just step his game up now that Tiger has announced his return.
