This week’s PGA Event, the Sony Open, presents intriguing matchups for golf betting fans.

Zach Johnson, the defending Sony Open champion in 2009, will be looking to defend his title against Ernie Els, Steve Stricker and Justin Leonard. Because the field is so deep, good odds can be found on some golfers with a chance to win in tournament matchup betting.

Let’s take a look at some of the better tournament matchups in this week’s Sony Open.

Sony Open Tournament Matchups

  1. Steve Stricker -145 vs. Zach Johnson +115 - - Even though Johnson won the Sony Open in 2009, Stricker is the favorite. What doesn’t make sense is why Stricker is such a big favorite in this. Yes, Stricker played well last week in the SBS Championship by finishing 10th, but Johnson finished 18th in that tournament and now goes to a course that he beat up on in 2009. Johnson’s an easy pick in this matchup because of the odds.

    Pick: Zach Johnson

  2. Ernie Els -110 vs. Robert Allenby -120 - - Allenby did win the Nedbank Challenge and Australian PGA to close out 2009, but Els has won the Sony Open twice and finished 2nd to Phil Mickelson in the WGC-HSBC in 2009. Els is also going off at better golf odds. He’s the pick.

    Pick: Ernie Els

  3. Retief Goosen -120 vs. Rory Sabbatini -110 - - Forget even thinking about betting Goosen in this matchup. Not only is Sabbatini going off at better golf odds but he shot a 63 final round at the SBS Championship last week and has two runner-up finishes in the Sony Open since 2006.

    Pick: Rory Sabbatini

  4. Lucas Glover -125 vs. Angel Cabrera -105 - - This is a tough matchup to call as Glover and Cabrera both played well last week in the SBS Championship. Cabrera’s driving accuracy leaves something to be desired at 58%, however, while Glover’s driving accuracy is right around the PGA Tour average. That should give Glover the edge in this matchup.

    Pick: Lucas Glover

  5. George McNeil -130 vs. Jerry Kelly Ev - - McNeil does have three Top 20 finishes at the Sony Open, but Kelly has six Top 25 finishes out of seven. He finished in the Top 5 in three out of those six Top 25 finishes. Kelly is the bet in this matchup.

    Pick: Jerry Kelly

  6. K.J. Choi Ev vs. Y.E. Yang -130 - - Yang played very well last week in the SBS Championship but Choi won the Sony Open in 2008 and should be tough this week. A bet on Choi is pretty much an “odds bet” in the sense that I could go either way, Choi or Yang. So, I’m going to take the golfer with the better odds. The fact that Choi has won the Sony Open definitely adds to the appeal.

    Pick: K.J. Choi
