Who are the Top Irish and Top English golf bets for this week’s Ryder Cup?
Three Irish players will tee-off at the Ryder Cup this weekend: Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington. Four Englishman will tee-off at the Ryder Cup this weekend: Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher.
Let’s take a look at the man from each golf wagering category that’s the best golf bet to be the Top Irish and Top English golfer for this weekend’s Ryder Cup!
Ryder Cup 2010: Top Irish and Top Englishman
**There are two separate betting categories, Top Irish and Top Englishman, in the golf sportsbook
Where: The Celtic Manor Resort, City of Newport, Wales
When: October 1st thru 3rd, 2010
Par/Yardage: Par 71, Yards 7378
TV: ESPN, ESPN2, NBC
Best Bet: Graeme McDowell +150
McDowell hadn’t scored a Top 10 finish in 5 straight tournaments started since winning the Celtic Manor Wales Open and the U.S. Open back to back in June, but he appears to have found his swing after finishing 3rd at the Austrian Open on Sept. 19th. When it comes to match play, Graeme is as tough as they come. At the 2008 Ryder Cup, Graeme McDowell won 2, lost 1 and halved 1 in 4 total matches. For the Vivendi Trophy, McDowell he won 6 out of 9 matches, losing 2, and halving the other. At the Royal Trophy, McDowell won all 3 of this matches. He also knows the Celtic Manor Resort course better than anybody having shot a 15-under over it for the Celtic Manor Wales victory.
Rory McIlroy +100 - - This will be McIlory’s first Ryder Cup but he did tie for 5th at both the 2009 WGC-Accenture Match Play Tournament and the 2009 Volvo World Match Play Championship. He also won 4 out of his 5 matches at the 2009 Vivendi Trophy.
Padraig Harrington +200 - - This will be Paddy’s 6th Ryder Cup. His overall record is 7 victories, 11 losses, and 3 halves in 21 matches. He hasn’t had the greatest of 2010’s. So, I’m going to say he’s actually a golf bet underlay at +200 to be the Top Irish at this year’s Ryder Cup.
Best Bet: Ian Poulter +220
If Ian could play in a match play format for every tournament he entered, he’d do it. The 2010 WGC-Accenture Match Play champ finished 20th or better only once in his last 6 tournaments played on the European Tour, that was an 18th at the Alstom Open de France in July, but the Ryder Cup format is perfect for him. This will be Poulter’s 3rd Ryder Cup. He’s been sensational with 5 victories and only 2 losses in 7 matches. His Vivendi Trophy record isn’t that stellar, 4 victories, 3 defeats and 3 halves in 10 matches, but he’s still the best golf bet in the Top Englishman category because there’s no doubt that he’s going to step it up against the Yanks.
Lee Westwood +180 - - Lee’s been suffering through some injuries this year. So, taking low odds on him in this category might not be wise even though he’s the most experienced, this will be his 7th Ryder Cup, member of the European Team.
Luke Donald +200 - - Donald laid it all out last week at the Tour Championship. That, more than anything, is the reason I’m hesitant to back him in this betting category. The talent is there, but will the focus be?
Ross Fisher +300 - - He’s not a bad golf bet to win this wagering category because he beat some of the best in the world at the Irish Open earlier this year, tied for 4th at the 2009 WGC-Accenture Match Play Tournament, and won the Volvo World Match Play Championship in 2009.
