Freshman guard Lance Stephenson celebrated being selected Big East Rookie of the Year by making the game-winning free throw with 1.8 seconds to play to help lift Cincinnati to a narrow 69-68 opening-round victory over Rutgers on Tuesday night.

Stephenson finished with a team-high 13 points and scored 10 points in a four-minute span of the second half while adding nine rebounds and five assists to help the Bearcats record their first-ever victory in the Big East tournament after losing its previous three games in the tournament.

Cincinnati snapped a three-game SU losing streak with the victory but failed to cover the college basketball betting odds as 8-point favorites against Rutgers to fall to 0-3 ATS over the last three games and a bankroll-busting 1-6 ATS over the last seven games overall. Cincinnati averages 69.2 points per game this season while allowing 66.6 per night defensively.

Louisville has alternated wins and losses over their last five games but managed to upset then No. 1 Syracuse, 78-68 in the final game at Freedom Hall on Saturday afternoon.

Louisville got a team-high 22 points from sophomore guard Kyle Kuric as they covered the college basketball betting odds as a 1-point home underdog to move to 2-1 ATS over the last three games. The Cardinals average 76.7 points per game this season while allowing 69.6 points per contest defensively.

Analysis: Louisville has beaten Cincinnati in two straight games and three of the last four meetings overall, including a 68-60 home win on Jan. 24. Simply put however, is the fact that the Cardinals are the better team at both ends of the floor. Cincinnati has posted a solid 3-1 SU record on neutral courts this season while Louisvillle won their only game of the season on a neutral court.

I like the Cardinals to ‘handle their business’ as they cover the NCAA basketball betting odds against the offensively-challenged Beracats and advance to a third-round meeting against the third-seeded Mountaineers of West Virginia.
