New York getting “Spankeed”
by Ford Macklin
It’s been a painful season for NY
Either Buddy Bell is a genius, or the New York Yankees are just not playing good ball right now. Tino Martinez is back on the bench, Randy Johnson is pitching his age, Jason Giambi is batting his weight and Tony Womack is not bringing the energy. This is not the same team that won 16 of 18 just a few days ago. This looks like a team on the downspin.
Losers of five in a row, the Yankees dropped three in a row to the worst team in the majors; the Kansas City Royals. Kaufman Stadium was the site of the Royals’ rebirth under new manager Buddy Bell. The Royals are slowly trying to climb their way out of “embarrassing” and into “terrible”. It’ll take a lot of work, but the Yankees have helped them off to the right foot.
New York has now dropped to only one game above .500 on the season. Now the Yanks limps into Minnesota, where the Twins are only too eager to pay them back for taking them out in the postseason last fall. Twinkie players can smell blood, so expect the woes to continue for the Bronx team. Seeing New York persist in their assertion that Ruben Sierra can still hit major league pitching is absurd. First and foremost, the Yankees need to make a trade and inject some youth/energy into their team. Maybe they need new players to push the incumbents. Heck, even their pitching staff could use some new blood. When Russ Johnson is the best you can do coming off the bench and when you don’t have a viable fourth or fifth starter: you know it’s going to be a long season. It’s safe to say that Joe Torre’s job is not in jeopardy. But, GM Brian Cashman’s days are being whittled down.
