Would you accept the Royals job?

Tony Pena, tired of the hopeless state of the Kansas City Royals situation, had enough and resigned from his post as manager of the beleaguered American League team. Named Manager of the Year in 2003, Pena won’t be unemployed for too long. There’s only so much you can do with basically a minor league team playing against major league talent.

And so the search for a new bench boss is under way by that crack Royals management staff in Missouri. But, even if you were qualified for the job, would you want to be the captain of a sinking ship? The truth is taking this particular MLB manager post could hinder your career. Think about it, it’s a lose-lose situation. There’s a poor product on the field with little help on the way up from the minors. Then, even if you’re able to miraculously guide Kansas City to a winning record by September, this team will NEVER go out and add a key player to put them over the top. If anything, taking this gig could set an aspiring skipper back in his career.

Imagine, you’re better off managing a triple A team in a solid organization rather than actually managing in the major leagues with MLB’s version of the Bad News Bears. The Royals are an embarrassment to the league and you have to feel sorry for their players, fans and ultimately their new manager. But the question remains: would you take the job? It’s a tough call. You’d have to balance your decision with the idea of taking a dream job versus working in nightmarish conditions. It really is a dilly of a pickle...
