The Mets fired Willie Randolph before Tuesday's game against the Angels, which they lost by a 6-1 score. But they came back to beat Los Angeles/Anaheim 5-4 in Wednesday night's game. Now, after a travel day, they come back to start what they hope will be a winnable series against the Rockies, who are locked in a tie with the Giants for third place in the National League West.

The Mets are in third place in the NL East, a half game ahead of Atlanta but 5.5 games behind the first-place Phillies. But they run into some trouble here against a Colorado team that while not surging to the top of the National League West, is greatly improving its play, with seven wins in the last ten games, and drawing a bead on the Los Angeles Dodgers, currently the second place team in the NL West.

John Maine has not aided in producing a lot of victories lately for the Mets; in fact, the team has lost in five of his last six starts. He lasted 6-1/3 innings against Texas five days ago and gave up five runs. He has shown good velocity, striking out 12 batters in his last 11-1/3 innings. But where Maine surrendered two runs or less in seven of his first eight starts, he has held opposing teams to less than three runs in only one of his last six. Also, six of his last eight starts have gone over the total.

Aaron Cook has been the most consistent pitcher for Colorado all season long. The right-hander has yielded more than four runs only twice, and in his last six starts has allowed more as many as two walks just once. Yes, that's consistency. And while the Rockies have won just 41% of their games, they have emerged victorious in 73% of Cook's starts (11-3). Colorado also broke out some offense in the recent three-game series with Cleveland, which it swept, scoring 20 runs in the three games.

At this price we're getting Cook on the cheap. Let's go with the Rockies, the -120 favorite in the BetUS Major League Baseball betting odds.
