The Rockies are heading into the new season as a +350 underdog on the NL West futures odds. The favorites in the West right now are the Arizona in the division last year and made the postseason by snagging the NL Wild Card.

On the NL Championship odds list, the Rockies are well back of the favorites. Currently Colorado is a +1000 underdog to repeat as NL champs. Colorado is even higher on the World Series odds, listed at +2500 to go one step further than they did last season.

The Rockies return with most of their roster from last year’s run intact. The few departures they have to handle include starter Josh Fogg, second baseman Kaz Matsui and reliever LaTroy Hawkins. The expected fillers for those holes are Kip Wells or Jason Hirsch for Fogg, Jayson Nix at second, and Luis Vizcaino who was signed to bolster the pen.

With Matt Holliday surrounded by Troy Tulowitzki, Garrett Atkins, Brad Hawpe and Todd Helton in the lineup, there’s no question that the Rockies will be able to put runs on the board. Where the questions start coming up is in the Colorado rotation. Jeff Francis is solid at No. 1 after winning 17 games last season, but nothing is guaranteed after him. Aaron Cook has had shoulder soreness during spring training, while Ubaldo Jimenez and Franklin Morales are both too young to be counted on to repeat last year’s success right away.

The Rockies’ bullpen was brilliant last year and they appear to be stacked again despite losing Hawkins. Vizcaino should be able to take his place without missing a beat, and if Brian Fuentes can get back on track he’ll be a great setup man for flame-throwing closer Manny Corpas.

Last season everything went the Rockies way as they defied the MLB Betting odds and marched all the way to the World Series. Colorado may need a little luck to get back again this year.
