Great under Gaston, Jays Looking To Close Season Strong

While the Toronto Blue Jays (81-71, 76-75 RL, 66-78-7 O/U) will miss out on the playoffs this season, the club has taken off under beloved manager Cito Gaston and hopes to close out the 2008 regular season on a high note in preparation for the 2009 season.

The Jays snapped a modest two-game slide in the Baltimore Orioles (67-83, 81-69 RL, 78-64-8 O/U), 8-7 after dropping the series opener 2-0 on Tuesday.

Gaston, who replaced former manager John Gibbons on June 20 with the team in last place in the AL East, has been so refreshing and such a big influence on Toronto’s players, that the franchise is insistent on having him back for at least one more season next year.

"Cito will be here next year," Nlue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said. "We'll take care of that."

The Blue Jays, will send veteran right-hander Jesse Litsch, (11-8, 3.75) to the bump looking to build on his last start as he limited the Boston Red Sox to three runs on five hits in 5.1 innings in Saturday’s 7-5 road loss.

The Orioles, who are assured of finishing in last place in the AL East for the first time since 1988, will counter with southpaw Garrett Olson (9-8, 6.84 ERA) who was rocked in his last start, allowing six runs and five hits while getting just two outs in Toronto’s 12-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Satrday.
