2007 Budweiser Shootout
Daytona International Speedway
Saturday, February 10, 2007

The Budweiser Shootout is a non-points Nextel Cup Series race. An All-Star event of sorts, the race features all of the pole winners from 2006 and the champions of past Budweiser Shootouts. Twenty-one racers are expected to compete this year.

Drivers and teams qualify for the event. If a driver leaves a team, the new team will make the race.

The pole position winners from 2006 who have qualified for the Shootout include: Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kurt and Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Brian Vickers, David Gilliland, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton, Greg Biffle, Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler, Scott Riggs, Ryan Newman and Boris Said. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Tony Stewart, Dale Jarrett, Mark Martin, Ken Schrader and Bill Elliott all qualify for the Shootout through their status as a champion of past shootouts.

The race is broken down into two separate segments. The first consists of twenty laps. A ten-minute break follows after which the field is lined up in the same order in which they finished the first segment. The second segment is fifty-laps long and it must finish with a green, white, checkered finish.

Since no points are awarded for the event, the motivation to win is pride and money. No seeding exists. Instead, the starting positions are determined by random draw.

The random draw, of course, complicates predictions at this early date. Given the introduction of so many new teams this year (see: Toyota), the involvement of teams in purchase issues (e.g., Roush Racing) and the potential off-the-track upheaval with DEI (read: no new contract for Dale, Jr. yet), it makes sense to look at the teams with steady relationships like Hendricks Motorsports and Gibbs Racing.

All other things being equal, it is always strong bet to pick Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson in any race. If you want to bet on NASCAR, the presence of so many other challenging dynamics makes their names seem sterling in this one.
