NASCAR Picks - Smoke Looks for Two Straight in the Carfax 400

Tony Stewart was terrific again last week at Watkins Glen. Not only did he finish in the Top 10, something that has happened with regularity this NASCAR betting season, but he won the race.
That gave the Sprint Cup Points leader some breathing room, but this is Smoke and Smoke never goes into a race without trying to win it. Can Stewart do it? Or will a driver like Mark Martin, who won the last time drivers took to the Michigan International Speedway, get it done?
Let’s take a look at some of the contenders to win the Carfax 400
NASCAR: Carfax 400 To Win
1. Carl Edwards +700 - - It’s time for Carl to breakthrough with a victory in 2009. Edwards was exceptional in 2008 but so far his 2009 has been all about just trying to get into the Top 10. That’s all well and good, but Edwards needs to do something spectacular soon or he might be relegated to Roush Racing’s second tier driver behind Greg Biffle. Edwards finished 4th at Michigan earlier this year. He could win it this time.

2. Mark Martin +500 - - Martin is one of the favorite in the BetUS online sportsbook to win the Carfax 400 on Sunday and he should. Martin has already won 4 races this year but he’s still struggling to stay in the Chase. Right now, Mark’s at 10th in the Sprint Cup Points Standings. That’s not going to cut it. So, another victory would really help him climb the Sprint Cup Points’ ladder.
3. Jimmie Johnson +375 - - Based on the odds, gamblers would think that Jimmie was Tiger Woods about to tee-off in the PGA Championship, but he’s not. Johnson finished 22nd the last time the race was at Michigan and he’s never won at the track. But, hey, this is Jimmie Johnson. So, if bettors want to wager on him at low odds, who am I to argue?
4. Jeff Gordon +600 - - Every week I find it difficult to not write about one of the Hendrick Boys. Okay, I never write about Jr. but Jr. doesn’t count. I mean, Jimmie, Jeff and Mark. All three guys have a shot every race. That includes this race where Jeff has been brilliant in the past. Gordon has won twice at Michigan. He’s finished in the Top 5 another 16 times including a 2nd place finish the last time NASCAR took to the Michigan International Speedway.
5. Tony Stewart +700 - - Smoke could definitely put back to back victories together because he’s been pretty good at Michigan with an average finish of 12.2 and a victory. The thing is that Tony is driving better than maybe he has his entire NASCAR career. A string of victories isn’t out of the question much less two in a row.
6. Kurt Busch +1200 - - Kurt has two victories at Michigan but his average finish of 19.4 has the odds makers making him a double digit wager to win this Sunday. I have the feeling that Busch is going to do something terrific. So, why go against that feeling? There’s no reason to when the odds are 12 to 1.
Best Long Shot
Juan Pablo Montoya +2000 - - Who else? Montoya has been excruciatingly close to crossing the finish line first the past couple of weeks. There’s just no other way to say it. The guy is on the cusp of a victory. I know. I write the same thing every week but the odds keep staying around 20 to 1 or so. I have to make him this week’s best long shot again.
