Where's the Deef?

We all know that the Phoenix Suns can score. In fact, they can probably put up numbers with more consistency than any other team in the league. But, where is the defense? You knew their defending abilities would be on trial in the postseason. Defense wins championships in the world of sports and Phoenix is certainly not adhering to this notion right now.

Facing Memphis in the first round, the Suns easily manhandled the average squad. Against Dallas in the second round, Phoenix prevailed because the Mavs couldn’t play defense well for 48 minutes in any game. But versus San Antonio, the Suns must play at a different level. They’re facing a championship-caliber team. The Spurs have “been there, done that”. The have all the veteran leadership they need- and then some.

Phoenix is attempting to play their run and gun style against an opponent that can take apart a pistol in less than ten seconds. San Antonio is a squad that can clamp down on any offense and the Suns are learning this the hard way. The solution? Play some gosh darn defense already!! The Spurs are eating up the Suns alive in the offensive end of the floor. Offensive rebounds and easy lay-ups are common place against Phoenix.

I thought Mike D’Antoni was coach of the year, what happened? Can’t he stress to his ball club the importance of playing team defense? Don’t they know that their NBA title1 dreams hinge on their ability to stop the other team from scoring at will? Where are the adjustments? Phil Jackson and Chuck Daly made their names on implementing changes to the game plan. Mike D’Antoni has to find a way to do the same. Blocked shots are great, but if you give up five lay-ups for every rejection; it’s going to be a long night.
