Durant To Defend His Title In H-O-R-S-E

Bookmark and Share by Tim Furious

Friday night betting nuts will get to see whether Durant can reign supreme at the non-televised event of H-O-R-S-E. The NBA threw a brick last year by not televising this event, but tonight you’ll get to see the event live on TNT. If you missed the event, you can actually watch the Youtube video.

The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar beat out the sharp shooting Joe Johnson and O.J. Mayo by making a shot while sitting in the stands. Sure Kenny Smith gets a tad bit too annoying in this one, but when isn’t he a headache to listen to?

This year, Durant’s enemies won’t be taken by surprise. Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics and Omri Casspi of the Sacramento Kings will try to unseat the only H.O.R.S.E champion in NBA history and creativity is a must. The oddsmakers have given Durant tight odds to repeat as champion, while the little known Casspi is the long shot.

H.O.R.S.E. NBA Betting Odds
Kevin Durant +105
Rajon Rondo +150
Omir Casspi +250

Experience has nothing to do with this event. Everyone and their mother has played a game of H.O.R.S.E. in their lifetime. The Geico sponsored event will be fun enough to watch, but it’ll be even better to bet on so let’s get to breaking down this whole thing one player at a time.

Omir Casspi is probably the guy making you wonder “who the hell is that?”. He’s a rookie from Israel which has the Jewish community raving. They love the kid, and now the betting public can love him too as a distant underdog. Casspi was the 23rd pick in the draft, taken by the Sacramento Kings, and has combined with Tyreke Evans to pretty much make Kevin Martin obsolete. He’s shot .669 from the field and averages 12.1 points per game, but I highly doubt the 21-year old Casspi has the creativity to shine tonight. He’s a straight up, bare bones player.

Rajon Rondo is the better underdog to pick if you’re swinging that way. The Boston Celtics, for whatever reason, are balking at offering this guy a contract extension. While he took the league by storm a couple years ago by being the fourth musketeer to Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and KG, he’s as integral to the success of the Celtics as you can be.

What can you say about Kevin Durant that hasn’t been said already? He is undeniably one of the best pure players in the league and his Oklahoma City Thunder look poised for the playoffs. Durant used the 2009 All-Star weekend in Phoenix to literally serve notice to the league by winning MVP honors in the Rookie Challenge and stealing the H.O.R.S.E. title in its debut. Durant is simply one of those guys that truly believes he can score from any direction and tonight will be no different. He’ll try everything, and in defending his title, he’s surely thought of some shots that Rondo and Casspi haven’t even dreamed of. Even in a competition as obscure as this one, I’m not betting against Durant.
