College basketball is right around the corner and before college basketball bettors look at individual games, it is a good idea to check out the BetUS future book and take a look at which teams are getting the money.
Well, as of now, there appears to be only one team getting the money. That would be the North Carolina Tar Heels who are at +500 in the BetUS future book to win the NCAA Tournament.
It makes sense that the Tar Heels are the favorite as all three - forward Tyler Hansborough, superstar in the making guard Ty Lawson and Will Graves return to Coach Roy Williams' team. Not only that, but Williams like every year, recruited some of the best high school players in the country. The team lost in the regional finals to Georgetown last year. They are well-coached, hungry, and stacked. Maybe + 500 are great odds on the Tar Heels.
All of it adds up to the Tar Heels making a run at the national championship. The biggest question regarding the Tar Heels will be whether or not they can keep from getting injured. They play in the rough and tumble ACC which means somewhere along the line the Tar Heels will face adversity. How they respond to it will go a long way in determining whether or not they add to their trophy case.
Like every year, the biggest danger to the Tar Heels will probably be the Duke Blue Devils. At this point, the Devils are +2000 on the BetUS future book line. Don't be fooled. The Blue Devils haven't lived up to Duke expectations the past couple of years but with point guard Greg Paulus now a junior and senior guard DeMarcus Nelson returning, the Blue Devils can be expected to make some noise in the ACC. On paper, they aren't nearly as intimidating as the Tar Heels, but they are coached by Mike Krzyzewski. That makes them the biggest threat to the Tar Heels.
Other teams in the ACC that could cause North Carolina problems:
Florida State has two senior guards starting in their back-court, Isaiah Swann and Ralph Mims. Although the Seminoles have little chance of winning the NCAA tournament outright but they might end their nine year tourney drought. They could cause some trouble for both Duke and North Carolina as success in college basketball is always predicated on guard play.
Boston College made a great run last year, but this year they are loaded with freshmen and sophomores. Still, they will be a high-flying, athletically gifted team and they are coached superbly by Al Skinner. Skinner received a contract extension in September which means he won't have to worry about developing the young talent on his team.
Georgia Tech returns guard Matt Causey. Because they play such a defensive-minded game, anybody who plays against Georgia Tech must make sure to keep their emotions in check. Georgia Tech will physically beat you up, that's just how they play. They try to do it to no matter whom they play including Duke and/or North Carolina. It also helps that Lewis Clinch, who led the Yellow-jackets in scoring last year before becoming academically ineligible is back.
NC State will be a tough team to handle, mainly because they return almost everyone. Are they good enough to beat North Carolina or Duke? Their coach, Gavin Grant, certainly thinks so. He's been making bold predictions all summer. They are a talented bunch that made it all the way to the ACC Tournament Finals last year and, if anything, they can make some waves in the ultra-tough ACC. Of course, then again, they could just fall flat on their faces. Time will tell if their ACC tourney run from last year was a fluke or not.
Finally, Wake Forest suffered the greatest loss of the summer when their coach, Skip Prosser, unexpectedly passed away. There is a lot of young talent on this Demon Deacon team, but I can't help but think that it will take a year before their new coach, Dino Guadio, settles them down.
