NCAA Basketball National Championship 2010: South Bracket Breakdown

Bookmark and Share by Mike Rose

Just one more day until NCAA basketball betting action hits its peak for the year, as 64 teams duke it out for the right to be National Champions. BetUS Sportsbook gazes into its crystal ball to show you what matchups you can expect up the road in this region.

The Saints Marching On - Last season, Big Ten betting fans had their hearts ripped out at the end of the Ohio State Buckeyes' overtime tussle with the Siena Saints. The Metro Atlantic champs are back for the third year in a row, and they're a trendy upset selection against yet another Big Ten team, the #4 Purdue Boilermakers.

Siena's front line is chalk full of veterans who know how to play at this level. HC Fran McCaffrey has acquired all sorts of tournament experience, and if he's setting himself up to take a bigger job next season (are you paying attention St. John's and DePaul?), he knows he needs to guide his team to the upset.

It'll happen again, as the Boilers just don't have what it takes to compete at this level without F Robbie Hummel in the lineup.

Siena 69 - Purdue 64

The "Ville"ans of the Bracket - #1 seeds should all march easily into the Sweet 16 before they have to break a sweat, but the Duke Blue Devils aren't your average #1 seed. In fact, in almost any other season, they'd be a #2, and a mediocre one at that.

But thanks to beating up a subpar ACC this season, the Dookies have the #1 tag on their head, something that a #1 from a year ago, the Louisville Cardinals, will enjoy taking out of the bracket. The Cardinals play some stifling defense, and there isn't a better coach in the game to win one game at this level than HC Rick Pitino. Watch out for the Ville to ruin this entire bracket.

Louisville 66 - Duke 64

Beam Me Up, Scottie! - Last season, it was G Scottie Reynolds that shot down the court and made the bucket that sunk the Pitt Panthers to lead the Villanova Wildcats to the Final Four. Now, Reynolds is back, and he'll be up to his old fun and games once again against a Baylor team in the Sweet 16 that probably isn't experienced enough at this level to stop him.

Reynolds, paired with his fellow backcourt mates G Corey Fisher and G Corey Stokes, will have all of the answers for the Bears. Look for Villanova to move on to the Elite 8 with a high scoring win over Baylor.

Villanova 88 - Baylor 80

Cat Scratch Fever in the Good Ol' South - We're making our NCAA basketball betting predictions right now and saying that #9 Louisville will make the Elite 8 as well, setting up yet another Big East duel late in the tournament. The good news for the Cards is that they had success against the biggest teams in the Big East this year.

The bad news is that that success didn't come into play until late in the season, long after the Wildcats marched into Freedom Hall and walked away with a 92-84 win. If Nova can break the Louisville pressure like that, on a neutral court, this one won't even be close.

Villanova 85 - Louisville 75
