St. Joe's needed a big effort in yesterday's game and it got one, blowing Fordham away by an 80-62 score and shooting a blistering 57% in the process. This is a sign that Phil Martelli's squad really means business as it goes after its NCAA bid.
Pat Calathes had 23 points on 9-for-12 shooting, Tahseed Carr was a perfect 7-for-7 and with the Hawks ahead by 19 at the break, everybody had a good time. In general Martelli didn't have to overwork anyone, which fulfills an objective when you have to play so many days in a row. In the previous meeting, St. Joe's won an 81-63 decision but allowed 48% shooting and had a lot of friendly "whistle action" in going to the line 37 times compared to just 10 for the Spiders.
Certainly things should be different from that perspective on the neutral court. But you can't discount the fact that St. Joe's has been a pretty dominant team in this series, winning and covering six of the last seven, and that Richmond has struggled to maintain contact with most of the formidable opposition it has faced. And the Spiders tend to fall asleep at times during a game. A case in point was this year's meeting, when they went through about a 12-minute period where they were outscored 25-3 and never got back into the contest.
We went into this tournament looking upon St. Joe's as a team to watch, because they know that if they can getNCAAB betting odds.
