Santa Clara has managed to win just one of its last 16 against Gonzaga, but that doesn't necessarily mean this year's edition of the Broncos can't be competitive. In fact, Gonzaga was very fortunate to come out of battle with an 87-82 double overtime win. Brody Angley of Santa Clara committed a completely unnecessary foul on a desperation shot with 0.3 second remaining to give Gonzaga a pair of free throws that were "free" in every sense. The Bulldogs tied things up, and went on to win.
Santa Clara is not an easy team to score against (41.3% FG's allowed), and in John Bryant, the Broncos are one of the few teams in the WCC who can match a big man up with Josh Heytvelt. Bryant had a horrible Saturday evening as Santa Clara lost to Portland, with only nine points on one-for-six shooting. he'll be looking for redemption. And we can't help but think Santa Clara will launch an all-out effort here, since they have been one of the possibilities mentioned for the new College Basketball Invitational (CBI) tourney, but lost an opportunity in Portland and has the conference tourney upcoming, where it will probably lose one more game.
This might be the right time to catch Gonzaga, which is coming off a satisfying revenge win over Saint Mary's and has all but sealed the #1 seed in the WCC tournament.
Let's take the points with Santa Clara, the 14.5-point underdog in the BetUS NCAA basketball betting odds.
