NCAAB: Power Rankings – Pittsburgh Climbs to Top With Huge Monday Night Game Looming
The wagering on the game.
Not only is Pitts vs. UConn a great game for basketball fans to bet on, it’s also the key game in determining which team will eventually become the top seed in the East Bracket of the NCAA Tournament in March. It’s also an important game for the Power Rankings since Pitt has been fantastic against the spread this season.
Let’s take a look at the rankings before the huge game on Monday night.
NCAAB: Power Rankings
- Pittsburgh Panthers 12-6-1 ATS - - The Panthers are simply dominating every opponent in the Big East, they’ve gone something like 5 and 0 in their last 5 games, with the exception of Connecticut. They travel to Connecticut on Monday night and could easily beat that team with another terrific showing from big man DeJuan Blair.
- 12-8-1 ATS - - Blake Griffin’s team has become one of the top teams in the nation by outhustling opponents. They have a huge game against Texas this Saturday. Griffin put up 40 points and 23 rebounds against Texas Tech in his last. Wow.
- 16-8 ATS - - How good are the Tigers? Pretty damn good. They’ve gone 8 and 2 against the spread in their last 10 games and just keep climbing up in the national rankings. John Calipari’s squad could easily cover in their next five with games against SMU, UTEP, UAB, Southern Miss and Houston.
- Michigan State Spartans 12-8-1 ATS - - Don’t look now but the Big Ten’s top team the past ten years is back with a 5 and 1 record against the spread in their last 6 games. That includes covering against Iowa, Ohio State and Michigan. Tom Izzo is starting to heat this team up. They will be a force in the NCAA Tournament.
- 14-10 ATS - - They lost to Notre Dame by a score of 90 to 47. They also lost to Connecticut by 17. There are issues with Rick Pitino’s team, but they still are in the top ten because they’ve gone 7 and 3 against the spread in their last 10 and should have turned things around after slapping DePaul around 99 to 54 in their last game.
- Villanova Wildcats 13-8 ATS - - They were beat by 21 points against West Virginia in their last game but before that they had been on a 9 and 0 streak against the spread. They play Rutgers, Syracuse, DePaul and Notre Dame in their next four games. They should cover in all four.
- Connecticut Huskies 10-9 ATS - - The #1 ranked team in the nation is awesome one night, a lousy bet the other night. They covered against Syracuse and Louisville but failed against the spread versus Michigan and Seton Hall. Really? Seton Hall? If they fail against Pittsburgh on Monday night, they might be in danger of losing the top seed in the East Bracket.
- 14-7 ATS - - The Sun Devils are the top team in the Pac-10, not the UCLA Bruins, after ASU beat UCLA for the second time this past weekend. Arizona State is going to be a tough team to deal with in the Big Dance because they can light up the scoreboard or take their time working in the ball. That makes them a disciplined team.
- Kansas Jayhawks 14-5 ATS - - KU is starting to play like a serious contender in the NCAA Tournament after 8 straight victories straight-up before a loss to Missouri. Even the loss to Missouri wasn’t an upset as Kansas was a 5 point underdog and lost by 2 points. This team could have a lot to say once the tournament starts.
- 10-13 ATS - - I’ll rank them because they smacked Duke around like a rag doll in Cameron Indoor Stadium, but their against the spread record hasn’t gotten any better this season. I’m not sure how good this team really is ATS. Now, straight-up is another matter as nobody boasts a starting five that could probably handle these guys.
