South Carolina may give the Commodores a break, since they have lost all three matchups against ranked opponents at home this year.
Derrick Byars is the 6-foot-7 swingman who runs the offense for the Commodores. He leads the team with 16.8 points per game, but has been miserable on the road. But Byars has a strong history against South Carolina, scoring 32 points in a 78-68 victory back on Valentine’s Day.
The Gamecock’s Tre Kelley will try to counteract Bryars’ penchant for scoring with points of his own. He is averaging a phenomenal 25.0 points in his last six games, while the team is averaging 64.7 points per game on the season.
Byars and the Commodores desperately need this game as they head in to the final stretch of the season. They need to prove that they can win on the road, and beating up on a Gamecocks team that ranks well out of the top-200 in scoring is a great way to start.
The Gamecocks will put up a good fight at home, but Vanderbilt is simply the better team and they are just hitting their stride now.
