NCAA Basketball Odds – Coppin State, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Meet In Matchup of Lesser Evils

Bookmark and Share by Eric Williams

The 11th-seeded Coppin State Eagles and the sixth-seeded Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks will both look to advance to the second round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament when the two rivals take to the court at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C. in a first round showdown at 3 PM ET today.

Wednesday, March 10, 3:00 PM ET

NCAAB Odds: Maryland-Eastern Shore -1

Coppin State Eagles (8-21 SU, 0-2 ATS, 3-15 Conf.)
Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks (10-20 SU, 2-2 ATS, 8-9 Conf.)

The Eagles struggled mightily to record just eight total wins while finishing with a paltry 3-13 record in conference play before closing out its year with five losses in its last six contests.

Maryland-Eastern Shore finished with an 8-8 mark in MEAC action, but dropped two of the last three regular season matchups. The Hawks have gone just 11-34 in conference tournament games all-time but managed to dominate the Eagles twice this season.

The winner of today’s contest will advance to meet third-seeded South Carolina State on Thursday (March 11) at 6 p.m.

Coppin State 411

Coppin State has lost two consecutive games and is coming off a dismal 74-54 loss to Morgan State on Thursday. The Eagles got a team-high 18 points from freshman shooting guard Kareem Brown but allowed Morgan senior guard Reggie Holmes to score a game-high 36 points in the loss while getting out-rebounded 44-27.

Maryland-Eastern Shore 411

Maryland Eastern Shore has alternated wins and losses over their last four games but looked pitiful the last time out, losing to Delaware State 57-37 on Thursday. Junior shooting guard Hillary Haley was the only player to reach double figures in scoring with a team-high 11 points.

Analysis: Maryland Eastern Shore may have looked clueless the last time out, but they apparently have Coppin State’s number this season as they won both games between the two teams during the regular season.

The Hawks beat the Eagles 70-62 on the road on Jan. 23 before spanking Coppin State 66-52 on Feb. 20.

Coppin State has never lost an opening round game in the MEAC Tournament (3-0) and also has never lost to Maryland Eastern Shore in the tournament having won each of the previous two meetings, but I say both of those streaks come to an abrupt end tonight.

Coppin State looks like the slightly better team at both ends of the floor statistically, but their poor play in conference games – and two losses to Maryland-Eastern Shore – should tell college basketball betting enthusiasts that the Hawks are the correct team in this matchup as the lesser of two evils.

Maryland-Eastern Shore covers the NCAA basketball betting odds in this contest with room to spare.
