Southern Conference Championships – Appalachian State vs. Wofford

The two best teams in the Southern Conference will go head to head tonight to see who reigns supreme. The Wofford Terriers have the best record in the conference, but they’ve been haunted by ghosts of the past which have emanated from their past losses to Appalachian State.
Appalachian State has gone 13-5 SU in conference play on the heels of junior guard Donald Sims, who has averaged 20.3 points and 2.3 assists per game. For those of you Mountaineer alumni who have stood by this unknown betting bandwagon, there’s no doubt you’ve found gold in them, there hills. The Mountaineers are a staggering 10-1 ATS in their past 11 games, losing on a -10.0 point line to Chattanooga despite an 80-74 win.
Even more encouraging for those of you that want to take the points is Appalachian State’s strong betting records against Wofford. In the past five meetings between these two Southern Conference teams, the Mountaineers have gone 5-1 SU/ATS in their last 6 matchups. The college basketball betting trends have the Mountaineers winning, but the oddsmakers have favored the Wofford Terriers and their adorably menacing mascot.

Wofford was the best Southern Conference team this year, going 15-3 SU in conference play and earning the best overall record to boot. However, they’ve been anything but a reliable team to bet on. They may be riding an undefeated streak of 12 wins, but they’re also just 5-5-2 ATS during that run. In short, they’re far from reliable.
That’s especially true when they have to play the Mountaineers. You may not know jack about either of these teams, but what you can track is success and the Mountaineers have simply owned Wofford. The Terriers may be burning up a great run, but against the betting line they’ve been woeful and untrustworthy.
While they’re a very strong team overall, I’ll take the point cushion offered by the oddsmakers. The gambit has leaned two heavily in Appalachian State’s favor in the past, and I’m not one to mess with the evidence of history. Bet Appalachian State to win the Southern Conference title tonight as they upset the Wofford Terriers on the moneyline.
