College Recap – NCAA Football "Quek" Hits

Mondays are a terrible way to spend 1/7th of your life to begin with, but waking up this morning was especially difficult. Why? Simple – we’re getting closer to Bowl season and that means yours truly is shuffling through the mess that is the BCS Polls and AP Polls. It’s madly confusing. Apparently nobody in the entire universe really understands it, but we all have to live with it. Here are some of the highlights from this weekend:

• Louisville managed to thump the previously undefeated Mountaineers and become the new sweethearts of college football. Personally, I’m uplifted by the fact we don’t have to really hear about the Mountaineers and their absurdly weak schedule anymore. It’s a great time to be a Cardinal, but they’re going to have to prove they can sack it up defensively before I give them any real credit.

• Ohio State and Michigan got pushed to their limits this weekend. Both teams needed a swift kick in the behind to refocus on the season. Ohio State still looks unbelievable right now. I don’t think anybody can beat them; not even Michigan.

• Probably the greatest thing I saw all day happened in the ND vs. UNC game: Terrail Lambert (ND cornerback) attempted to jam UNC wide receiver, Hakeem Nicks, at the line. Instead, Nicks shoved him on to the ground as if he were a pedestrian child and then ran a streak route to score an impressive 72 yard bomb. It must be awful to get owned (especially in slow motion!) on national television. I can only hope Terrail Lambert’s mother wasn’t watching…

• Jeff Samardzija is now the all-time touchdown king of Notre Dame, convincing me that I should be eating more perogies as part of a successful polish diet

• Despite the loss to Louisville, West Virginia’s Pat White put in a heroic effort totaling 347 total yards and four touchdowns

• Chris Leak lost me as a believer when he threw three picks this weekend against Vanderbilt. He’s still one of the best passers in the game, but Colt McCoy of Texas is certainly making a case as the best passer in the league

• Question: Could things get worse for the Clemson Tigers?

• Answer: No

• Is anyone else as exited as I am for potentially having two Steve Smiths on their fantasy team? Steve Smith is proving to be a valuable asset to Booty and the USC Trojans as a killer wide receiver. What a fun team to watch.

• College Football’s most elderly coach, Joe Paterno, was injured when one of his tight-ends barreled in to his left knee. After being convinced by his staff, Joe Pa was carted off the field with a knee brace and flown home for medical exams. Apparently, even a fractured leg wasn’t going to stop him from being on the sidelines. Now THAT’s a feisty coach! Get well soon.

• USC and Notre Dame are still staring at their clash, which will be a statement game for both teams. Notre Dame, however, has way more to gain since USC is ahead of them in the polls. More on this as that game gets closer!
