Perhaps the most noticeable intangible in making a college football bowl game prediction for the Military Bowl this week is how the Maryland Terrapins respond to the firing of head coach Ralph Friedgen. Despite going 8-4 SU this season and bringing about a massive turnaround from a woeful 2009, nothing the Terrapins did was enough to keep Friedgen at the helm.
That isn’t to say that the coach the players respond to won’t be on the sidelines when the Terrapins play the East Carolina Pirates in the Military Bowl. That should give rise to the players pushing themselves to the limit, especially since they have another intangible in their favor in college football bowl game predictions.
The site of the 2010 Military Bowl is RFK Stadium, which is a hop and a skip away from Maryland’s campus.
The Terrapins were one victory away from breaking in to the ACC title game this season, and finished the year on a 4-2 SU and 5-1 ATS run after a wobbly start out of the gates. Their end to the season has given rise to a -7.0 college football bowl game betting line in their favor, and it most certainly helps that the East Carolina Pirates fell in to a horrific tailspin to end their own season.
East Carolina Pirates (6-6) vs. Maryland Terrapins (8-4)
Wednesday, December 29th --- RFK Memorial --- 2:30pm EST
Military Bowl Betting Line: Maryland -7.0 (67.0)
East Carolina is what I like to call a “target team”, meaning that they’re a team you target in big games for at least two heavy upsets. Their 33-27 victory over North Carolina State, as well as their 44-43 victory over Southern Miss a week earlier, proved that East Carolina can have some mid-season potential as an underdog in some games. It happens with them every season quite frankly.
But nobody in their right mind is giving the Pirates a chance in college football bowl game predictions revolving around the Military Bowl. They ended the season 1-4 SU and ATS and most notable was a 35-76 blowout against Navy that displayed their horrific rushing defense.
Any team that can attack East Carolina on the ground can beat them outright and Maryland’s rushing game averages 124.9 yards on the ground. That’s bolstered by a balanced passing game which averaged 217.5 yards and the offense put up 30.7 points per game this year.
Maryland’s defense, however, is the big staple of the Military Bowl. East Carolina’s passing game ranks 7th in the country with 329.0 passing yards, and the Terrapins yielded just 220.9 yards against in that regard.
Considering how well balanced, and undervalued, Maryland is in general, coupled with the emotional boost of Friedgen’s last game along with their unusual home field advantage (or at least home area advantage), the Terrapins are a great play in college football bowl game predictions to outlast the Pirates in what will be a very one sided game.
