Ouch! Did anyone see what almost happened to Arkansas last weekend? And at the hands of Western Illinois no less? The Hogs were actually down 24-14 seven minutes into the final quarter, then managed to rally back and score twice to win. If they had been defeated, it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy than Bobby Petrino, the turncoat who assured Memphis that same weekend, it would have produced some poetic justice.
Arkansas obviously had some personnel losses, as Darren McFadden and Felix Jones both departed for what will likely be stardom in the NFL. So the Razorbacks ran the ball just 21 times on Saturday, with Casey Dick, the so-so quarterback who was more liability than anything else in that backfield, tossing it 41 times in the opener.
Will Arkansas, off that near-shocker, wake up with a maximum effort against Louisiana-Monroe? Well, let's remember that even though ULM is not well-known, there is a considerable difference between them and Championship Subdivision programs (that's the name, isn't it?).
What should be of major concern to Arkansas fans is that Herb Donaldson, Western Illinois' capable running back, rambled for 157 yards against them, because youth in the secondary already designates that unit as vulnerable. Don't confuse the Hogs' defense with that of Auburn, which shut out ULM last weekend. And keep in mind that Kinsmon Lancaster is now a three-year starter at quarterback for the Warhawks. The main point of Arkansas' focus will likely be next week's date with Texas, so don't go "hog wild" laying this number. We'll take the points with Louisiana-Monroe, the 13-point underdog in the BetUS NCAA college football betting odds.
