The Top-5 NCAAF Bets of Week 1

Football is finally back and there is a hellacious matchup in NCAAF Week 1 to kick things off as Alabama takes on FSU for early dominance of the rankings. Outside of that, there are some other tempting takes. We all know that Week 1 is not the place to get risky, but there's definitely some temptation in a certain west coast game that will take place later in the day.

#1 Alabama Crimson Tide -7.0 over #3 FSU Seminoles
The bad news for Florida State is that they have to play the Alabama Crimson Tide The good news for Florida State is that they can actually afford a loss this this early because pollsters have a short term memory and the more important matchups for the Seminoles will be later in the year. The Chik-fil-A kickoff game in Atlanta's new Mercedes-Benz Stadium is going to be awesome.

It's hard to believe that these teams haven't faced each other in a decade when FSU beat Alabama 21-14 and so much has changed since then. The Seminoles enter the 2017 season as the No.3 ranked team with a Heisman-worthy player in the form of quarterback Deondre Francis.

The big beat here for me is Alabama's defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt rising to the top of the conversation in terms of future head coaches. He'll lean on Minkah Fitzpatrick heavily at the safety position to be the anchor of this defence from the top down, and the absolute fear for Florida State fans is the Alabama secondary making Francis' day a difficult run.

This game could very well be close, but the money has to lean in Alabama's favor. FSU has rarely lived up to the hype in big moment games, and while I think their fortunes will change this season as a program, they'll get things off to a rough start against the favorite to win it all.

The x-factor here that would make you bet on FSU is Derwin James, the monster defensive end for the Seminoles that can single-handedly change games. Until he's a proven commodity, Saban will do what he usually does and reward those that back him while the haters continue to hate.

#9 Michigan Wolverines -3.5 over #16 Florida Gators
Harbaugh's program continues to stream in the right direction and will have their hands full against a punchy Gators team that's desperately looking to become relevant again. The Wolverines have always been a strong bet at home going 8-0 SU and 4-4 ATS, with most of those spread losses coming against monster lines.

Michigan has a lot of questions to answer because the team is relatively young, but Harbaugh's imprint on this program is beginning to take on an identity of its own. The Gators will have defensive answers for the Wolverines, but the lack of quarterback play is really going to haunt them overall.

#15 Georgia Bulldogs -14.5 over Appalachian State Mountaineers
There are some curious things happening with this betting line, but with Nick Chubb healthy and ready to unleash hell on the conference again, Georgia is prime for a bounce-back season. I do have a funny feeling about this game, but not a big enough one to really throw shade at Georgia.

#10 Wisconsin Badgers -27.0 over Utah State Aggies
This is merely a notice that Wisconsin has routinely been one of the best betting teams in all of college football. Starting the season off against a program that went 3-9 ATS last season will kick things off just right.

Western Michigan Broncos +27.0 over #4 USC Trojans
We go through this song and dance with the Trojans every year. "Heisman quarterback! Great recruiting! They're back!" And then they're not. I have never had it in me to trust the USC Trojans, and while WMU lost the backbone of their attack last year, credibility and consistency at this level have a lot to do with coaching and recruiting.

The Broncos knocked on the door last year with a terrific, undefeated season that ended with a bowl game loss to Wisconsin, but there's something in the water here. USC is always overblown in the eyes of pollsters and handicappers and I don't see why this year is any different.
