LSU: The Week That Was

LSU has looked a little bit better each week, last week being their best performance of the season. They struggled at Washington on a long road trip, then played better at home against Vanderbilt and finally opened it up on offense, winning 31-3 against Louisiana-Monroe.

The Tigers are starting to find their swagger, especially some of their big playmakers. All-SEC wideout Brand LaFell had two touchdown grabs last week.

Mississippi State: The Week That Was

It wasn’t pretty, but the Bulldogs got the job done on the road against Vanderbilt. Mississippi State churned out a whopping 260 rushing yards and wore the Commodores into the ground, but despite out-gaineding the Commodores 341-157, they still only won 15-3.

Dan Mullen seems to have the Bulldogs on the right track but their offense is struggling to score. That might be a problem against LSU.

The Week That Is:

Very quietly, LSU has climbed to No. 7 in the nation. The Tigers had a down year last season and not many people want to give them credit quite yet after being such a disappointment.

But as you look at what LSU’s done so far, they’ve earned some respect. They went into Washington and won, which is something that USC couldn’t do, and they comfortably won against Vandy and Louisiana-Monroe.

In this particular match-up, the difference will be who dictates the pace. For Mississippi State to win, this has to be a low-scoring game. They will have to shutdown Charless Scott and LaFell and force a couple of turnovers.

If LSU makes this into a scoring affair, the Bulldogs simply won’t have the weapons – or points – to match.

The Bulldogs are using a two-quarterback system that just isn’t exactly effective right now. Chris Relf and Tyson Lee will share time but really, MSU is just going with the hot hand.

LSU’s defense isn’t as dominant as it was two years ago but it’s still a formidable group. Look for them to key in on the MSU rushing attack and force the Bulldogs to win through the air, which they won’t be able to do.

LSU may not rack up the yards but they could still pile the points on if the Bulldogs turn it over a couple of times, which is likely to happen. LSU gets the job done as they prepare for a big road trip to Georgia next week.

Pick: LSU -12 and under 45
