The battle for the best team in Idaho will take place Saturday, when the Idaho Vandals visit their biggest rivals the Boise State Broncos.
For Boise State, it is another banner season, in a decade that has been full of them. They are currently 9-0, have won 21 straight regular season games and 21 of their last 22 overall.
Offensively, they are led by sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore. Statistically, Moore is one of college football best’s quarterbacks, as he is currently ranked first in quarterback rating (169.3) and 11 th in completion percentage, at 67.5 percent.
On the season he has thrown a staggering 27 touchdowns to just three interceptions. Boise State is also currently ranked second in all of college football in scoring offense, scoring an average of 41 points per game.
Statistically, Boise State also has one of the best defenses in college football as well. They are currently ranked No. 14 in scoring defense (allowing just 16 points per game), and No. 10 in total defense (271 yards per contest). However, last Friday night they were exposed by a pesky Louisiana Tech team that stayed with them for four quarters. In the game, Tech scored 35 points, the most allowed by Boise State all season.
As for the Broncos’ cross-state rivals, Idaho is putting together one of their best seasons in recent program history. The team is 7-3, although two of their last three games have ended in defeat.
Their leader is junior quarterback Nathan Enderle, who is having the best season of his career under center. On the year he has thrown for 15 touchdowns to just nine interceptions, and has a quarterback rating of 152.3, good for 12 th in college football. It is important to note however that Enderle missed Idaho’s game last weekend against Fresno State with a rotator cuff injury. He’ll be a game-time decision Saturday.
Defensively is where Idaho has run into most of their problems this season. They are allowing 31 points per game (100 th in college football), and their 409 yards allowed per contest is ranked 98 th. Not quite what you want to see going against one of the best scoring offenses in college football.
There seems to be little doubt that Boise State Broncos is going to win this game, but can they cover? A lot depends on the health of Enderle. If he plays I see the Vandals being able to move the ball well enough to cover this spread. If he doesn’t, well, all bets are off.
Despite it, I’m going to take the Vandals. Sure Boise State is at home, but nobody wants to get embarrassed in a rivalry game. And if there was ever a year where Idaho kept this game close, this would be it.
Again, try and wait until Saturday and see if Enderle will play. If he does, take the Vandals. If not, well the odds of Idaho covering go down quite a bit.
Aaron’s Pick: Idaho +31 ½
