NCAA College Football Props – Week 6 Heisman Update

Bookmark and Share by Charles Jay

Some guys have fallen by the wayside on the BetUS Sportsbook board for the Heisman Trophy They are Cullen Harper, Eric Berry, Jake Locker, Juice Williams, Kellen Lewis, Matt Grothe, Patrick White, Rudy Carpenter, Noel Devine, Todd Boeckman, Tyrod Taylor, Curtis Painter, Zac Robinson.

Some of it makes sense. LOCKER is hurt, having suffered a thumb injury that would keep him out six to eight weeks. But he wants to come back - at another position. Heisman points! HARPER's Clemson team has lost twice already and are out of the national title race, which would have been important for Harper's candidacy. PAINTER is rated 80th in the country in pass efficiency and couldn't get the job done at Notre Dame, so he's out. CARPENTER is just another guy putting up nice numbers for a team that is second-tier. DEVINE has 399 yards rushing, but he's not turning any heads. His West Virginia teammate, WHITE, has 369 yards rushing, but only two TD passes against Division I opponents. LEWIS has 4 TD's, four INT's and a 2-2 record. Ho-hum. WILLIAMS also doesn't overwhelm anyone with his passing or rushing stats. GROTHE, who has eight TD passes and two INT's and paces his team in rushing, should still be on the list, as long as he has South Florida undefeated. So should ROBINSON, who has completed 71% and leads the #4 offense in the country (Oklahoma State). BOECKMAN, who I tagged a Heisman "darkhorse" (ugh!), lost his job to freshman Terrelle Pryor.

So what are we left with? Let's look at the field, in first-name alphabetical order, as it appears at BetUS:

To Win Heisman Trophy 2009

Chase Daniel +275

Chris Wells +6000

Colt McCoy +1200

DeMarco Murray +2500

Graham Harrell +1800

Jeremy Maclin +5000

Joe McKnight +5000

John Parker Wilson +6000

Knowshon Moreno +650

LeSean McCoy +8000

Mark Sanchez +1600

Matthew Stafford +2000

Michael Crabtree +4000

Percy Harvin +5000

PJ Hill +3000

Sam Bradford +350

Tim Tebow +600

Todd Reesing +5000

DANIEL (+275 at BetUS), is 76% accurate and has a 12-1 ratio of TD passes to interceptions, and plays against Nebraska this weekend. Can't argue with him as the favorite. WELLS (+6000 at BetUS) will have to do something superhuman to get back in the race at this point. McCOY (+1200 at BetUS) has 14 TD passes, one INT and is 80% in his passing. He'll gain some steam if Texas continues unbeaten, but there is a vicious five-game stretch coming for the Longhorns, with Colorado, Oklahoma, Missouri, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. So we'll see. MURRAY (+2500 at BetUS) is a great runner, but he will be overshadowed by Oklahoma teammate Sam BRADFORD (+350 at BetUS), who is a sizzling 72% with 16 TD passes and just a pair of interceptions.

HARRELL (+1800 at BetUS) doesn't have the gaudy numbers he did last year, but the Texas Tech QB is still second in the nation in passing yards, and the Red Raiders are unbeaten and in the top ten. His top target, CRABTREE (+4000 at BetUS) leads the nation in receiving yards per game, but has just 29 catches, off his 2007 pace. MACLIN (+5000 at BetUS), one of my favorites, does a little of everything but maybe not enough of one thing. McKNIGHT (+5000 at BetUS), with 175 yards rushing yards, doesn't belong on this board. WILSON (+6000 at BetUS) does not have huge numbers, but he could be in the hunt as long as Alabama stays near the top of the polls. MORENO (+650 at BetUS) has ten rushing TD's, but he's 28th nationally with 98 ypg, and hasn't lived up to the hype. McCOY (+8000 at BetUS) has averaged 4.4 yards a carry; he doesn't belong here anymore either.

SANCHEZ (+1600 at BetUS) could have kept himself firmly in contention as long as USC was #1, but those plans are now shot to hell. Let's see how the Trojans respond the rest of the way. STAFFORD (+2000 at BetUS), to me, is more of a component than a genuine cornerstone. HARVIN (+5000 at BetUS) has 387 all-purpose yards; right now he may be more viable than TEBOW (+600 at BetUS), who only has 125 rushing yards and eight total TD's, although he hasn't shown an interception yet. REESING (+5000 at BetUS), with 70% completions and 1405 yards, is quietly having a very good year for Kansas. Let's see what happens against Oklahoma on October 18.

The guy who has a chance to make the biggest gain this week may be Wisconsin running back P.J. HILL (+3000 at BetUS), who lines up against the vaunted Ohio State defensive front this Saturday in a game his Badgers can certainly win. Hill,.who has 449 yards, did not get to face the Buckeyes last year, because he was out with an injury. A big game will get his name mentioned.

Next time, maybe we'll talk about some of the names who SHOULD be on this list.
