NCAAF XBOX 360 Simulation – Kansas vs. South Florida

Bookmark and Share by Mike Rose

Week 3 of the South Florida Bulls; Kickoff from Raymond James Stadium is set for 8:00 ET. This will be just the second time these two programs have met with Kansas getting the best of USF 13-7 back in 2006 as 3.5-point home favorites.

Weather: cloudy in the evening then clearing. Lows in the mid 70s. East winds 5 to 10 mph.

1st QUARTER:

QB Matt Grothe and the Bulls offense opened up their first drive of the game with a huge 23-yard passing play to WR Carlton Mitchell forcing Raymond James Stadium into a frenzy, and followed it up with another big play from RB Moise Plancher who scampered 32-yards for the games first score.

After the Jayhawks offense went three and out, the Bulls were sitting pretty at their own 40. After another big strike through the air, KU’s defense finally got pressure on Grothe and stripped him of the pigskin in the backfield. MLB Joe Mortensen fell on it to give QB Todd Reesing and the Jayhawk offense their second shot at solving the Bulls stop unit.

Their first play from scrimmage was a 25-yard strike to frosh WR Daymond Patterson, and it was followed up with a 20-yard scoot by RB Jake Sharp. Head coach Mark Mangino decided to gamble on 4th and short at the Bulls 12-yard line, and it paid off when Reesing scrambled for four to move the chains. After RB Angus Quigley got it to the Bulls 2-yard line, HC Mangino elected to press his luck on 4th down again, but this time, SFL batted down Reesing’s pass and took over on downs.

The Bulls rode RB’s Planchar and Kelly’s backs’ all the way out to midfield where their drive stalled. However, head coach Jim Leavitt went for some trickery pulling the trigger on a fake punt that kept the drive alive.

2nd QUARTER:

Leavitt’s gamble paid off when RB Richard Kelly bolted into the endzone from four-yards out for his second TD of the game to increase the Bulls lead to 14.

Now down a couple of scores, the Jayhawks offense had to come up with some type of answer before this game got out of hand. After a 30-yard pass and catch by WR Dezmon Briscoe, KU’s drive stalled at the Bulls 48-yard line. Not to be outdone by his opponent, Mangino went into his bag of tricks and found the perfect fake punt run to allow the Jayhawks to continue its march.

That said; the drive ended when Reesing’s pass intended for a streaking WR Kerry Meier was intercepted in the endzone.

South Florida then went on a 14-play drive that eat up close to seven minutes off the clock, and finished with a 20-yard FG off the leg of K Maikon Bonani. Now down by three scores, KU scrambled to get something done before the break, and lightning struck when Kerry Meier got behind the defense and scrambled for an 80-yard TD to cut the Bulls lead to 10 at the break.

3rd QUARTER:

KU did absolutely nothing offensively to kick off the third quarter, but did pin the Bulls deep in their own territory. QB Matt Grothe and RB Moise Plancher formed a solid 1-2 punch that got the Bulls all the way down to the Jayhawks 37, but their 4th and short play got stuffed in the backfield and KU took over on downs.

Kansas did absolutely nothing again on its next possession forcing HC Mangino into a tirade on the sideline that actually registered a reading on the Richter scale.

SFL got into KU territory once again on its next drive, but elected to go for the long field goal on fourth down instead of going with another trick play. K Bonani’s 53-yard attempt sailed wide left, and Kansas’ defense got another stop.

It looked as if they were going to go three and out for the third straight time, but Reesing found Briscoe on a 21-yard slant play to move the chains for the first time in the second half. They picked up two more first downs before Reesing hooked up with WR Dezmon Briscoe for a 41-yard TD pass to cut the Bulls lead to three.

After KU’s defense forced a three and out, the Jayhawks looked to at the very least tie the score on their next drive. They had a shot to do just that, but K Jacob Branstetter’s 57-yard try came up short as the quarter expired.

4TH QUARTER:

The Bulls capitalized on the swing of momentum by putting together their best drive of the night that was capped off with a six yard TD pass from Grothe to WR Taurus Johnson to built the Bulls lead back up to 10.

Kansas’ offense went backwards on its next two plays forcing them into a 3rd and long that never developed. The Bulls took over at midfield looking to put a nail in the Jayhawks coffin.

Grothe navigated the offense down to KU’s 26-yard line where K Bonani converted his second FG attempt of the game to increase the Bulls lead to 13 with less than four minutes remaining.

With Raymond James Stadium in a frenzy, the Jayhawks did their best to get something going but just couldn’t come up with the big play when it mattered most. KU got down to the Bulls 18-yard line, but failed on its 4th down attempt handing the ball, and the game, over to Jim Leavitt and the South Florida Bulls.
