Is Auburn QB, and Heisman Trophy winner, Cam Newton the best bet in the online sportsbook to score the first TD in Monday night's BCS Championship Game?
The Auburn Tigers remain the favorites in the sportsbook against the spread, but the Oregon Ducks have a decent frontrunner be the first guy to score, just like Auburn does, in RB LaMichael James. Will it be James, Newtwon or another player to get the first TD on January 10th?
BCS National Championship: Oregon Ducks (12-0) vs. Auburn Tigers (13-0)
Where: University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, Arizona
When: Jan. 10th, 2011 at 8:30 pm EST
Player to score the First Touchdown
Best Bet: LaMichael James, Oregon RB, +300
Analysis: Nothing against Newton, in fact, he's my second best bet to score the first touchdown, but it's hard for me to look past LaMichael James getting into the end zone first on Monday night. James scored 22 total touchdowns this season including 21 on the ground. I believe he most likely will get a pass catching TD as the Ducks most likely will send their receivers long, so as to get the Auburn secondary to play downfield, while QB Darron Thomas rolls out and hits James underneath. James is good enough to take the ball and go for a long TD run after the catch. That's what I envisioning happening on Monday night. Of course, I'll be okay if James powers it in from the 2-yard line for the first TD of the game as well.
Second Best Bet: Cameron Netwon, Auburn QB, +300
Analysis: I'm surprised that the BCS Championship Game odds on Newton are at +300 in the Player to score the first Touchdown category. Newton is a special guy. His stats are mind boggling. He threw for 28 touchdowns and ran for another 20. That's 48 touchdowns. I do believe that he's facing a defense that's slightly better than what a lot of college football fans might think, but I also believe that Newton could catch the Oregon D off-guard in the first Auburn offensive series. If the Tigers win the toss, and Auburn elects to receive, then those who have money on Newton in this category might be already counting their profits.
Best Double Digit Odds Pick: Darron Thomas, Oregon QB, +1100
Darvin Adams, Auburn WR, +1100
Football Betting Analysis: Either one of these guys is worth a shot in the sportsbook given the awesome college football odds. Oregon QB Darron Thomas ran for 5 touchdowns on the season. If Auburn's D is paying too much attention to the Duck's passing game and LaMichael James on the ground, then Thomas could easily get the first TD in the game.
Auburn WR Darvin Adams scored only 7 touchdowns on the season, but the Ducks have been planning for weeks to stop Newton. Oregon's secondary may leave Adams open or in single coverage on the first drive of the game. Newton is a good enough QB to get him the ball.
