The Heisman Race Comes Down to the Wire
by Tim Furious

And then there were three. All year we here at BetUS.com sportsbook have been trying to figure out who deserves the illustrious award. A few playmakers, like Iowa Hawkeye’s Shonn Green, made some noise but quieted as the three finalists brought the pain. The flashes in the pan have burnt out. Now, all that remains are the head of the class.
There’s an inherent problem in definitively figuring out the winner for college football betting purposes. So what have we done to make it easy? Simple. I’ve taken my morning breaking down the pros and cons of each candidate so you don’t go bonkers losing your betting dollars.
THE KING RETURNS – TIM TEBOW
Junior - Quarterback - Florida Gators
Rarely does a sophomore take the Heisman home, but Tebow defied the odds last year by taking the nation by storm once again. We all saw the potential when he was a freshman bulldozer in the BCS Championship against Ohio State University, but nobody expected him to become the definitive playmaker.
Tebow is the reigning champion in this fight, which speaks for itself. Rarely does this award go to a sophomore. But Tebow’s numbers were undeniable last year. His numbers were not only as impressive, his Gators are in the BCS Championship after a set of unpredictable circumstances.
Tebow has the lowest throwing totals of anybody in this group. He had 2,515 passing yards and 28 passing touchdowns. His versatility saves him, as he added 12 rushing touchdowns in to the mix as well. What bolsters his case even further is that he single handedly muscled the Gators out of the swamp and in to the spotlight after they faded early in the season.
Not helping Tebow’s chances this time around is the fact that nobody has repeated as a back-to-back Heisman winner since 1975. The last victor who can make that claim was the great Archie Griffin of Ohio State. Can Tebow build another historic land mark by being the first repeat winner in nearly 25 years? If you’re doubting him now, you were probably in the same boat last year when he was the first sophomore to win in…oh wait…ever. Making history is what this guy does.
THE UPSTART – COLT McCOY
Junior – Quarterback – Texas Longhorns
I’ve been a hater on Colt McCoy for pretty much his entire college career. And guess what? The hating continues! I’m willing to give this guy a lot of credit. His numbers speak for themselves, piling up 3,445 yards and 32 passing touchdowns, not to mention only seven interceptions and 10 rushing touchdowns. The kid has blossomed in to a lethal threat.
However, I will always be bothered by a few things. He blatantly lost that game to the Raiders when he couldn’t formulate a first down to save his life and Graham Harrell out threw him to the nines.
Combine that with the fact that he didn’t really “win” the game against Oklahoma. The rushing game and the defense contributed to bring down the Sooners, McCoy was just simply there. The beatings on McCoy will continue until he proves that he can takeover a big game and win it.
THE UNCROWNED PRINCE – SAM BRADFORD
Sophomore – Quarterback – Oklahoma Sooners
Bradford has been my front runner for the crown all year long. I loved him last year as a freshman, I love him even more as a sophomore. He leads the pack with 4,464 passing yards and a startling 48 touchdowns. He has big game performances in all the important matchups, and even bigger ones in the games that didn’t matter.
The glaring blemish on the kid’s record is the loss to Texas. But again, the Sooners lost that game based on rushing defense, not Bradford’s ineptitude. He still posted 300+ yards and four touchdowns in that game. How are you going to be mad about that kind of performance when you’re voting for the Heisman.
He’s our definitive favorite in the race at -300 to win the Heisman Trophy. Again, handing the award to a player who is likely to win it next year, or the year after, is a stretch. But just as his chief rival, Tim Tebow, proved last year, anything is possible in the Heisman Race.
AND YOUR WINNER IS…
…Sam Bradford at -300 sports betting odds. The future is seldom predictable. But take the following in to consideration: Bradford was a mainstay of my column at the head of the class, losing out to Graham Harrell and Colt McCoy on occasion. However, despite any miscues, his stock never dropped completely.
McCoy disappeared in the big games that mattered to him, and the win over the Sooners came too soon. Bradford was able to rally from that loss and lead his team to a title fight with the Florida Gators of the SEC.
On top of that, my only knock on Tebow is that he has the name recognition to carry his failings of the early season forward. As soon as Florida allowed him to rush the ball more often, which was inspired by the Gators’ offensive woes early on in the season, Tebow stormed in to the race with unrelenting force.
I’ll be on Bradford’s consistency, and his vastly better numbers, over Tebow’s late rush to the gate. Bet on Sam Bradford to take his rightful place on the throne by unseating Tim Tebow. It’ll be a nice achievement considering the Sooners are poised to get throttled by the Gators in the BCS Championship game anyways.
