The Handoff - A Value-Packed Trio of Week 2 Football Picks

Okay BetUS NFL pigskin bettors, after a mostly wild and wacky opening round of Week 1 games that caused many pro football gamblers to take a bit of a hit in the pocketbook, it’s time to get down to business as Week 2 quickly approaches.

While last week’s opening salvo of games produced a ton of eye-opening surprises that left bettors and NFL fans slack-jawed, my trio of value-packed, expert Week 2 NFL picks will help gridiron gamblers everywhere that came up short in Week 1, get back in the black in no time at all.

NFL Odds
Pittsburgh Steelers -14
Over/Under 40.5

Analysis: The Seattle Seahawks (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS, 1-0 O/U) and Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS, 1-0 O/U) both suffered losses in their respective Week 1 openers, with Pittsburgh surprisingly looking worse in losing to Baltimore than the Seahawks did in falling to Frisco.

Nevertheless, it is the Steelers that I am advising NFL gamblers to back in this Week 2 matchup, in large part because they’ll have a chip the size of Mount Rushmore on their collective shoulders coming into this already-important Week 2 matchup.

The Seahawks are coming off a 33-17 loss against NFC West division rival San Francisco in which they failed to cover the spread as a 6-point road underdog, falling to a disappointing 2-5 ATS in their last seven games.

Quarterback Tavaris Jackson completed just 21 of 37 passes for 197 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception while also being limited to a paltry 64 rushing yards.

The Steelers were absolutely man-handled in their 35-7 loss to AFC North division rival Baltimore in Week 1 as Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger completed just 22 of 41 passes with one TD and a whopping three interceptions.

Pittsburgh never came close to covering the spread as a 1-point road dog as they allowed the Ravens to roll up a surprising 170 rushing yards.

In spite of their Week 1 troubles, I like Mike Tomlin to get his team back on track in a big way against the mediocre Seahawks. Seattle’s inability to run the ball effectively will play right into the Steelers hands in this contest and I expect them to pressure the mediocre Tavaris Jackson into at least two or three mistakes that the Steelers’ quickly capitalize on in a big way.

Seattle is 0-4 ATS in their last four games as a road underdog of 10.5 points or more and just 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall.

The Steelers are 4-0 ATS in their L/4 games as a favorite, 6-1 ATS in their L/7 games against a team with a losing record and an impressive 5-1 ATS in their last half-dozen home games.

More importantly, the Steelers were embarrassed a week ago. Back Big Ben and the Steelers to get the huge home win and narrow ATS cover in this Week 2 showdown.

Arizona at Washington

NFL Odds
Washington Redskins -4
Over/Under 44.5

Analysis: The Arizona Cardinals (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U) and Washington Redskins (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U) both got off to successful starts a week ago and will look to build on their respective victories when they take the field in a matchup of two teams built mostly on offense.

The Cards picked up a narrow 28-21 win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 1 to narrowly cash in as a 6.5-point home favorite while Washington got their first win over the Giants in three seasons by recording an emphatic 28-14 NFC East divisional home win to cash in as a 1.5–point home underdog.

With both of these teams being built on offense and neither ballclub having particularly overpowering defenses, I really like the Over in this contest.

The Cardinals came through for me just one week ago as an Over pick and have now played Over the O/U Total in three straight regular season games and five of their L/6 games overall.

Arizona has also posted a very consistent 43-17 mark against the O/U Total in their L/60 games, so clearly, this team hasn’t won a lot of games with its defense since head coach Ken Whisenhunt took over four years ago.

I know the Under is 7-0 in Washington’s last seven games as a home favorite and 7-3 in the L/10 meetings between these NFC rivals, but both of these teams can now score the ball consistently – even if they don’t play much defense.

It’s going to be fairly close, but I say don’t sweat it! Play the Over and chalk this one up as a wrap!

Jacksonville at NY Jets
Live from MetLife Stadium at 1:00 PM ET
TV: CBS

NFL Odds
NY Jets -8.5
Over/Under 38.5

Analysis: The Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 0-1 O/U) and the New York Jets (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS, 1-0 O/U) both scored big wins in their respective Week 1 openers, but I’m going on record right now to say that there is no way the Jags win this game, making this pick just a matter of whether New York will cover the spread when the pair meet at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Jacksonville got a very narrow a 16-14 win against AFC South division rival Tennessee as career backup and newly-minted starter Luke McCown completed 17 of 24 passes for 175 yards and running back Maurice Jones-Drew rushed for 97 yards and one score on 24 carries.

Jacksonville cashed in against the spread as a 2-point road underdog while playing Under the 37.5-point O/U Total.

The Jets got off to a slow start in their Week 1 matchup against Dallas but scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to snatch a 27-24 win from the ‘Boys by doing what they do best – create turnovers.

The J-E-T-S failed to cash in as a 6.5-point home favorite but got a solid effort out of Quarterback Mark Sanchez as the former USC star completed 26 of 44 passes for 335 yards with two TDs and one interception. Wide Receivers Plaxico Burress and Santonio Holmes combined to grab 10 balls with Burress adding a TD catch.

New York’s overpowering defense forced Cowboys’ Quarterback Tony Romo into two fourth quarter turnovers and I expect them to do the same to the mediocre Luke McCown in this contest.

The Jags have failed to cover the spread in four straight Week 2 contests under head coach Jack del Rio while also going 1-7 ATS in their last eight road games versus a team with a winning home record.

New York is 6-2 ATS in their L/8 games during the month of September and has shown a nice ‘bounce-back’ ability by going 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following an ATS loss.

Expect the Jets to get the double-digit home and ATS cover in this Week 2 NFL showdown.
