CFL Football Odds – BC Should Cover Against Alouettes
by Dave Bond

The CFL Football odds clearly do not like the British Columbia Lions and I can’t really blame them. Going into Friday night’s game, they are listed as 10 ½ point road underdogs against a Montreal team that will be starting a rookie quarterback.
BRITISH COLUMBIA LIONS (1-7) vs. MONTREAL ALOUETTES (6-2)
Friday, September 3, 7:30 PM ET
Percival Molson Stadium
Montreal, Quebec
Broadcast: TSN
CFL Football Odds:
British Columbia: +10 ½ (-110)
Montreal: -10 ½ (-110)
Total: 50 points: Over (110), Under (110)
The British Columbia Lions are in a freefall. They have lost seven straight games and not even the return of their starting quarterback reversed their fortunes. The management, the players and the fans know that the Lions’ effort is completely unacceptable.
There is not much of a secret as to why the Lions are in such dire straits. They are last in the CFL in total yards per game, they are seventh in points per game and they have the second worst rushing attack in the entire league. Last week against Calgary the Lions ran for just 44 yards and passed for only 191 yards.
The Lions can take a little solace in the fact that they were able to put up 35 points last week against the CFL’s best defense, but the bulk of those points came in garbage time. The young and inexperienced offensive line has been exposed all season long but CFL Football odds are that they will improve. The quarterbacks have not had any time to throw, the receivers have not had time to complete their routes and the rushers have not been able to get any sort of offensive momentum.
The Lions defense has held them in games. Four more turnovers last week further proves that their defense is a cohesive pack.
The Montreal Alouettes were dealt the biggest blow possible when quarterback Anthony Calvillo was knocked out of the game with a sternum injury. That injury will keep him out this week too, forcing untested Chris Leak into action. CFL Football odds will be slanted BC’s way just a bit based on this information.
Leak is lucky to be leading the second ranked scoring offense into action. The Alouettes are also ranked third in yards per game. The receiving corp. is solid and has four playmakers that will be at Leak’s disposal. Some help from the CFL’s worst rushing attack would be nice in order to take some of the pressure off.
Montreal’s defense is second in the CFL in points allowed per game with just over 24, is second ranked against the run but has struggled versus the pass, allowing 295 yards per game. They won’t have to be spectacular against the CFL’s worst offense.
CFL Football Odds Outlook:
The Lions played the Alouettes fairly tough in their first meeting. Montreal won that game 16-12, but that was with Calvillo at the helm. The Alouettes are 4-0 at home so far this season and should win the game. However, 10 ½ points may be a bit optimistic for Alouettes fans. The Lions have to break out sometime and my guess is that the Alouettes will bring the best out in them. Montreal wins but BC covers the enormous spread.
CFL Football Odds Pick: British Columbia Lions + 10 ½
