Thursday Night Football: Los Angeles Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs

Most Thursday Night Football Games are not entertaining, but this should be one of the top games of the NFL season. The Los Angeles Chargers will travel to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in a huge AFC West Showdown. The winner of this game will take over first place in the division, and the top overall seed in the AFC.

The Chiefs beat the Chargers by a score of 38-28 in the season opener, and Los Angeles is looking for revenge. The Chargers bring a 10-3 record into this matchup, and have won nine of their last 10 games. Kansas City comes into this game with an 11-2 record, and both of their losses have been away from home. The Chiefs are 3.5 point favorites in this game.

Mahomes Continues To Amaze

Second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been absolutely amazing this season for the Chiefs. Mahomes has thrown for 3,923 yards and 41 touchdowns, and looks like a sure bet to win the 2018 MVP Award. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill has caught 66 passes for 1,119 yards this season, and has 11 receiving touchdowns. The Chiefs will look to throw the ball early and often against the Chargers.

Defensively, the Chiefs still struggle to keep opponents out of the end zone, but they have played just well enough this season. The Chiefs are allowing 27.3 points per game this season, and gave up 28 to the Chargers in their first meeting. Kansas City is allowing 295 passing yards per game this season, and that could be a big problem against an elite QB in this game. The Chiefs do have 39 sacks this season, and could use a few of them in this game.

Chargers Suddenly Have a Defense

A big reason for the Chargers recent surge has been the play of their defense. Los Angeles is allowing just 20.8 points per game this season, making it a top-10 defensive unit. The Chargers have intercepted 12 passes this season, and their terrific secondary will look to keep them in this game.

The Chargers offense could get a huge boost in this game as running back Melvin Gordon is expected to be ready to suit up. Gordon has run for 802 yards this season, while averaging 5.2 yards per game. The presence of Gordon should make life easier for quarterback Philip Rivers. Rivers is having another solid season, throwing 28 touchdowns to just six interceptions this season. The Chargers offense will need to put up points to keep up with the Chiefs.

Kansas City Wins Shootout

The first matchup between the Chiefs and Chargers was a high scoring affair, and the same should be expected on Thursday night. Kansas City has a far superior offense to the Chargers, but the Chiefs also don't have a defense. Look for the Los Angeles Chargers to have a solid game on offense, but they simply can't keep up. The Chiefs are the cream of the crop in the AFC West, and they prove it again on Thursday night. Bet the Kansas City Chiefs -3.5 over the Los Angeles Chargers.
