With the regular season set to get underway in a matter of days, let me get started.
New England Patriots Total Pass Interceptions
Over 18 INTs -110
Under 18 INTs -130
Analysis: The New England Patriots scratched and clawed their way to a stellar 11-5 record in 2008 despite losing quarterback Tom Brady in the very first game of the season. However, sports betting sharps should know that New England has decreased its team interception total in each of the last two seasons since ranking fourth in the league with 22 picks in 2006. New England recorded 19 team interceptions in 2007 but managed to rack up just 14 last season in what looks like a disturbing tend. However, New England head coach Bill Belichick obviously saw his defensive backfield’s deficiencies and addressed them properly in both, this year’s draft and during the annual free agent signing period.
The Patriots brought in veteran cornerback Shawn Springs and drafted safety Patrick Chung with its first pick in this year’s draft before adding cornerback Darius Butler with its third overall selection. Still, I’m not convinced the Patriots will record the 19 interceptions it will take to go over their set O/U total which is why I like the Under 18 interceptions here.
NFL Pick: New England Under 18 INTs
Miami Dolphins Total Pass Interceptions
Over 17 INTs -120
Under 17 INTs -120
Analysis: The Miami Dolphins are back on track under the guidance of Bill Parcells BetUS NFL sports betting members. After recording a pitiful eight team interceptions in 2006, last in the AFC that season – the Dolphins increased their team total to 14 in 2007 despite winning just one game that season. The arrival of Parcells, along with right-hand man and head coach Tony Sparano, helped the Dolphins become one of the surprise teams in all of football last season as the Fins increased their win total by 10 games, going 11-5 last season and winning the AFC East.
Miami recorded 18 interceptions last season and should increase that total in 2009 after drafting arguably the best cornerback in college football in former Illinois star Vontae Davis. Miami also drafted another cornerback in Sean Smith with its third round pick. Take the Over here as the Dolphins should be even better on defense this season than last year, the team’s first in the Parcells, Sparano era.
NFL Pick: Miami Over 17 INTs
Buffalo Bills Total Pass Interceptions
Over 15 INTs -120
Under 15 INTs -120
Analysis: While the Buffalo Bills are hoping that game-breaking, high-profile wide receiver Terrell Owens can provide the offensive spark its team needs in order to challenge for a playoff berth in 2009. However, stopping the other team, particularly by picking off the opposing quarterback, has not been one of the Bills’ strong suits recently. The Bills racked up 13 interceptions in 2006 and a solid 18 in 2007 but for 2009managed to pick off just 10 passes last season, tied for fifth-worst in all of football. With the Bills going well Under their set O/U total in two of the last three seasons, I say they stay Under their Over/Under team interception total for 2009 as well.
NFL Pick: Buffalo Under 15 INTs
New York Jets Total Pass Interceptions
Over 16 INTs -120
Under 16 INTs -120
Analysis: While the New York Jets have decreased their team interception total in each of the last three years, recording 16 back in 2006, 15 in 2007 and 14 last season, I think new head coach Rex Ryan, the former defensive coordinator for the perennially stingy Baltimore Ravens, will help the Jets improve their defense immediately in 2009. Ryan is a chip off the old defensive block his legendary father Buddy Ryan used to near-perfection almost two decades. I don’t think it’s unrealistic to expect Ryan to improve New York’s interception total by the three picks they would need over last season to go Over their set O/U total here. Take the J-E-T-S, Jets, jets, Jets, to play Over their set O/U total on this wager.
NFL Pick: Jets Over 16 INTs
