With the 2009 NFL regular season set to get underway in less than two weeks, let me get started.
Carolina Panthers
Over 14 INTs -130
Under 14 INTs -110
Analysis: The Panthers have been a perennial defensive powerhouse for the most part during the John Fox era but has just 12 team interceptions last season. The Panthers also picked off 14 passes as a team in both, 2007 and 2006, making this pick a tough one.
Since the Panthers haven’t broken the 14-interception plateau in three seasons, and only added a rookie safety to their defensive backfield, I say they play Under their set O/U total here.
NFL Pick: Carolina Under 14 Team INTs
Atlanta Falcons
Over 15 INTs -120
Under 15 INTs -120
Analysis: The Falcons had an absolutely fine season under rookie head coach Mike Smith and rookie quarterback Matt Ryan in 2008, but the team still needs to improve on a defense that picked off just 10 passes last season after intercepting 16 passes in 2007 and 12 passes in 2006. While I like Smith, the former defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, to improve his team’s defense in 2009, I just don’t see Atlanta making a six-interception increase in 2009. The team did draft three defensive backs inside its first five picks in this year’s draft, but that makes this prop a better bet next year. Take the Under here.
NFL Pick: Atlanta Under Team 15 INTs
New Orleans Saints
Over 15 INTs -120
Under 15 INTs -120
Analysis: The New Orleans Saints were pretty atrocious on defense last season but they did manage to rank fifth in the NFC in team interceptions with a surprising 15 picks. That was up from the 13 interceptions they posted in 2007 and 11 picks the team recorded in 2006. After adding cornerback Malcolm Jenkins with its first pick in this year’s draft and selecting safety Chip Vaughn in the fourth round, I like New Orleans to increase its team total in the interception category again in 2009.
NFL Pick: New Orleans Over 15 Team INTs
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Over 19 INTs -120
Under 19 INTs -120
Analysis: The Buccaneers picked off a whopping 22 passes as a team last season, tied for the NFC lead in that category with Chicago and Green Bay. Despite not adding any defensive backs to its roster for 2009, I think the Buccaneers can still top their set O/U total here with former defensive coordinator Raheem Morris taking over for former head coach Jon Gruden. The Buccaneers picked off 16 passes in 2007 and just 11 in 2006.
NFL Pick: Over 19 Team INTs
