KEY NFL FOOTBALL BETTING TREND: Patriots have covered nine straight against the Jets at East Rutherford

The New York Jets (4-12 SU, 6-9-1 ATS) when these two AFC East division foes meet up on Sunday, September 14 at 4:15 PM ET at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

In the BetUS NFL football betting odds, the Patriots are listed as a 9.5-point advance road favorite

Here are some NFL football betting trends as they relate to this matchup (reflecting numbers going into the 2008 season):

* NE has won 24 of its last 26 games SU

* NE has lost its last six games ATS

* NE has played six of its last seven games UNDER the total

* NE has won 11 of its last 12 road games SU

* NE has covered eight of its last 12 road games

* NE has played five of its last six road games OVER the total

* NY has lost 10 of its last 13 games SU

* NY has covered five of its last eight games

* NY has played six of its last seven games UNDER the total

* NY has lost four of its last six home games SU

* NE has won 10 of the last 11 meetings SU

* NE has covered six of the last eight meetings

* Four of the last six meetings have gone OVER the total

* NE has won seven straight meetings SU as the road team

* NE has covered the last nine meetings as the road team

What looms as something of a concern is that, as far as we are projecting, Kellen Clemens will be making his second start as the Jets' quarterback in this game. If New England makes him nervous, that will make offensive gains problematic; after all, we are not high on running back Thomas Jones. The Patriots led the National Football League with 411 yards per game last year, and also led the league in scoring with almost 37 points per game. Coach Bill Belichick may look to employ the "scorched earth" policy again this year, but something tells me they're going to be looking to achieve more balance this season. That means more of Lawrence Maroney through the line.

Of course, let's not forget that Tom Brady has a host of outstanding receivers, all of whom serve a great purpose. Randy Moss is the guy who can go down the field; Wes Welker is the possession receiver. Jabar Gaffney will undoubtedly have an increased role this season with the departure of Donte Stallworth. Ben Watson and now Marcus Pollard will split tight end duties and do it well. Will the Pats be as explosive as they were last year? Well, they could be.

How does that relate to this game with the Jets, the team who started all of the "Spygate" accusations in the first place? New England came into Giants Stadium in the 2007 season opener and buried the Jets by 24 points, and in the season's 14th game, a lot of people thought there would be so much bad blood that the Pats would bury the Jets with even more aplomb. They came into the game as a 20-.5-point favorite but actually took things kind of easy and won a 20-10 decision.

The recent pointspread history between these teams suggests a strong bias toward New England. The patriots have won 10 of 11, and have really exhibited their superiority at the Meadowlands, winning seven straight and covering nine straight meetings. It's been a rough off-season for the Pats, having had to live down their loss to the Super Bowl and then watching as "Spygate" continued to linger. Yes, they're probably overpriced here, considering the Jets have made some improvements to their offensive line that will make it potentially one of the better units in the NFL. But I have to believe there is some frustration that is going to manifest itself for a team that is basically fresh, healthy and still out for some "revenge."

It certainly would not be a common practice for us to lay this many points on the road, but since we know the Pats possess the capability, and Belichick has shown a proclivity to beat up on the team who made him - albeit briefly - their head coach at one point, we'll take a shot in laying 9.5 points with New England in the BetUS NFL football future betting odds.
