Super Bowl Prop Bets you Didn't Know About

Bookmark and Share by Greg Melikov

There are so many props for Super Bowl XLIII that you would have had to start betting yesterday to get them all in.

The props range from the usual and sublime to the ridiculous and the weird. For example, odds in the BetUS sportsbook favor Pittsburgh scoring the first touchdown at 7-5 and Arizona is 3-1 while the Steelers are 11-4 to kick a field goal and the Cardinals are 13-4.

In the passing category, there are several interesting props involving both quarterbacks. Arizona’s Kurt Warner is 9-5 to toss for at least 191 yards to 245 yards. Ben Roethlisberger is 6-5 to connect for yardage between those same parameters.

The Warner wager looks like a good bet since the Cardinals have averaged through the air more than 292 yards a game. Not so fast, Pass Happy Bettor! The Steelers have limited the opposition to 157 yards per contest.

The Roethlisberger bet seems reasonable. Not so fast, Big Ben Backer! While Arizona has given up more than 221 yards per game, the Steelers have only averaged 207 yards each outing.

Pure logic dictates taking underdog Arizona and the points since the spread is seven in most betting venues. In addition, the Cardinals have averaged five more points per game than Pittsburgh.

Not so fast, Wise Wagerer! Arizona gave up 175 points in its last seven, 25 points each time. The Cardinals held foes under 14 point only twice while going 5-1.

The Steelers only allowed 101 points while going 6-1 as opponents scored 14 or higher only three times. Pittsburgh gave up less than 14 ½ points per contest.

If you want to bet on the Super Bowl before kickoff, there’s the coin toss. This ridiculous 50-50 wager has the loser winning 22 of the 42 games while heads and tails were dead even.

Not so fast, Flip Fanatic! In the past dozen clashes, winners of the coin toss won just three times.

Ten years and a day after Denver legend John Elway walked off the field as Super Bowl MVP, he will take part in the coin toss at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on Sunday. Sorry, no wagers won what color shorts he’ll have on.

Now for the weird – and I mean the real weird. Believe it or not, some Super Bowl props have nothing to do with the game, teams or players.

The names of those websites have been withheld to protect the guilty. Would you believe there’s a wager floating around on what color Gatorade will douse the winning coach? Yellow is favored at 3-1.

Let’s proceed to even more bizarre offerings: How many songs will Bruce Springsteen play during the halftime show? Over 3 ½ songs: 3-1. Under: 1-2.

This is perhaps the weirdest: What’s the chance that a wardrobe malfunction like Janet Jackson’s during halftime in ’04 will pop up?

The odds, from the bottom, are: Patti Scialfa, 2-1; Bruce Springsteen, 3-1; Clarence Clemons, 4-1; Steven Van Zandt, 8-1; Max Weinberg, 10-1; and Garry Tallent, 12-1.

As Dick Enberg might shout, if he was announcing the game: “Oh, my!!
