Super Bowl XLIV Prop Betting Picks

Bookmark and Share by Tim Furious

Prop betting is always a fun way to earn some extra coin, especially when it comes to the Super Bowl and BetUS plans on bringing you all the Super Bowl props you need to make some extra money this Sunday. Here’s a preview of what’s to come, plus some picks to get your Sunday off to the best start possible.

Coin Toss

A lot of bets are called a “coin flip” but how many times are they actually based on one? The 50-50 odds of the coin toss are about as even as they get, with heads leading tails 22 to 21 in the past forty-three renditions of the Super Bowl. In five of the past six Super Bowls the team that won the coin toss lost the game. So if history serves as any reminder, I’m taking New Orleans to win the toss. As for the actual coin itself, I’m taking tails because that’s exactly what the Saints will have tucked between their legs by the end of the game. Also, for whatever reason, I just think tails is due.

Coin Toss Bet – New Orleans / Tails -110

MVP

Of all the prop Super Bowl bets you can make in our sportsbook, this is by far the one that gets the most action. The winner of the award has never gone to a player on the losing team, so the best bet to make with the MVP prop is a hedge. If you like the Saints to win, bet Peyton Manning to win the MVP. Vice versa, take Drew Brees if you like the Saints.

There are a lot of tempting long shots on the board, but the Super Bowl odds award going to any player other than a quarterback are slim. Pierre Garcon and Marques Colston could be great underdog bets, but any time a team has a prolific passer like Brees or Manning under center, he’s the guy who hoists the extra hardware. I’ve already committed to the Colts beating the Super Bowl spread, so my money’s on the logical favorite.

MVP Prop Bet – Peyton Manning -105

Manning Total Passing Yards

The O/U for this prop bet is set at 310.5 passing yards for the league MVP. As I ran down in my Super Bowl XLIV free pick, Manning has torched two top-three defenses in the league already and if his 377 yard performance against a top-ranked Jets defense is any indicator, the 310.5 passing yard mark will be a breeze for him.

Brees Total Passing Yards

Manning’s counterpart in the Super Bowl is Drew Brees, who’s getting an O/U of 295.5 passing yards. My problem here with Brees is that he simply hasn’t blown the doors off the hinges in the playoffs. With an average of just 222.0 passing yards in this year’s playoffs, the UNDER is my bet for Brees.

First Commercial – Car, Beer or Field

Let’s just say that when the economy sucks and jobs are scarce, people drink way more. That means less money for other products, such as computers (think Apple, Microsoft) and far less dollars spent on the stock market (think Ameritrade or Etrade). With the kick to the groin the automotive industry took this year, the easy money for the commercial prop bet is beer, and I’d say Budweiser gets first crack.

Player To Score First Touchdown

This bet is all over the map, with Joseph Addai and Pierre Thomas leading the way at +500. Yet in a game that will feature passing like crazy, I’m going with the proven attack of Peyton Manning and the heartwarming story of Pierre Garcon notching the first score for Haiti.
