The Washington Capitals had a nice bounce-back campaign going on - at least until they were pounded by the Buffalo Sabres in their first post-Christmas game on Tuesday night. Now Alexander Ovechkin and company will be looking to shake off that defeat and come back strongly against a couple of Atlantic Division opponents this weekend.
The Capitals will play a road game against the New York Rangers on Saturday night. Both the Devils and the Rangers are ahead of the Capitals in the Eastern Conference standings, and they’ll be looking to increase that gap this weekend.
Elsewhere on a busy Friday night around the NHL it’s Anaheim at Carolina, the Rangers at Ottawa, Montreal at Florida, Columbus at Minnesota, Boston at Chicago, St. Louis at Colorado, and Los Angeles at Calgary.
As well, Sidney Crosby and his Pittsburgh Penguins will get a visit from an injury-riddled Toronto Maple Leafs team, while the Nashville Predators will get a tough test when they head south to play the Dallas Stars.
Saturday night features a battle of Eastern division leaders, as the Sabres host the Atlanta Thrashers. Beating up on Washington on Tuesday night allowed Buffalo to keep a comfortable distance ahead of the Montreal Canadiens in the Northeast Division standings, while Marian Hossa and the high-scoring Thrashers still find themselves solidly ahead of the defending-champion Carolina Hurricanes in the Southeast Division.
Other games on Saturday include New Jersey at the Islanders, Montreal at Tampa Bay, Colorado at St. Louis, Boston at Nashville, and San Jose at Phoenix. A couple of northern rivalries are also featured on the Saturday slate, as the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs renew the Battle of Ontario at the Air Canada Centre, while the Vancouver Canucks travel inland for a Northwest battle with the rival Edmonton Oilers.
Edmonton has another rival on tap for Sunday, as they play in Calgary against the Flames. There are five other games on the NHL schedule for Sunday, including Los Angeles at Detroit, Chicago at Columbus, Philadelphia at Carolina, and San Jose at Dallas. As well, the league-leading Anaheim Ducks will be looking to pick up yet another win on Sunday night when they travel north to Minnesota for a contest against the Wild.
